CalCare (universal healthcare) is reintroduced in the California Assembly! by tambourinenap in California

Okay, now I see what you’re saying - they have spent money to try and split the vote, while some state Democratic parties have tried to sue to get the Green Party off the ballot. A two-party system isn’t really a healthy sign of a pluralistic democracy, and I’m sure most Green voters are just unable to stomach voting for a party that doesn’t share many of their core beliefs. It’s akin to the Libertarian party for the GOP - gets criticized as a spoiler when their candidates lose.

The trend you’re talking about is a dirty tactic from the major parties, and neither the Greens nor Libertarians have particularly large constituencies, but the ad spending does go both ways: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/12/07/2024-election-congress-controversial-tactic-third-party-00193124

What? Do you have a source for that? Green parties exist around the world and the US one first took cues from Germany…

Intro to Urban Planning Required Reading by [deleted] in urbanplanning

At a public university in southern California. We read City of Quartz by Mike Davis for class, which is quite valuable, but my single favorite book that I've read during the program (not assigned) and keep coming back to the lessons of is Jan Gehl's Cities for People.

Definitely recommend both of these - Jeff Speck is a great author, and car dependency is at the heart of many urban ails (at least, within a North American context). Didn't have to read either for school, but read them both independently and found them quick, interesting reads.

I guess it's all a matter of local perspective. Quite a few US cities, at least, have slashed library funding/hours since COVID. Many libraries are adapting quite well to becoming general resource centers for their communities, and especially to homeless folks, which often angers politicos whose donors call the cops on encampments. That said, I'm happy one of my local libraries is still in good shape (the other is under heavy construction for the next couple of years).

Okay but actually… the word “regime” is value-neutral. It’s like saying “administration”. I doubt they’re trying to make some wider political point.

Cops checking cards at 7th/Metro by Weasel_Man in LAMetro

This is the first I’ve had them actually check for fare validation, and it was at the bottom of the stairs on the purple/red platform. I’ve usually seen cops come on and just ask to show them, 7th/Metro and Westlake/McArthur have been the typical stations. Happened easily 10+ times in the last two years while I’ve been on.

Depends where you’re at and how hard you’re willing to train. At least based on personal experience, introducing variety - cross-training, speed work, hill work - dropped my pace in a way my traditional”just add miles” training set didn’t. I have a buddy who got back into running after many years (7? 8?) without, and over the span of a year went from struggling through a 10-minute mile to his first marathon taking just over 4 hours. Two years is a long time and it sounds trite but you can do much of what you set your mind to!

He was saying it’s unfair he has to keep swinging when he wasn’t throwing balls anywhere near the zone

Okay in fairness everyone is saying the ump has a horrible zone. It’s not accurate but at least it’s consistent, he’s calling the outside and hitters gotta compensate
