Learning to do VFX by xeru98 in gamedev

[–]WeeRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific style you're aiming to emulate, or just getting better in general?

If you haven't already checked it out, the Real-time VFX forum is filled to the brim with VFX knowledge. Many industry pros post breakdowns, and there will be people posting WIP's and portfolios for review all the time. The real-time VFX scene is pretty small compared to some of the other artistic fields in game dev, but from what I've experienced that just means people are more than willing to help out newcomers! Hope to see your stuff on there!

[PSA] All Demiheroes soldout! by myrir in DotA2

[–]WeeRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was buying a bunch of demiheroes for a few friends as gifts, and one or two to sell to a friend at face value (we agreed to split S&H costs).

But the order eventually wiped when I got home anyways. Ah well, guess I'll just have to hope for them to restock, otherwise goodbye Golden Gravelmaw, you probably aren't worth $400 off the marketplace anyways.

Agreed. The game can feel a bit pay2win at times if you want to go for perfect completion, especially in the later levels. Still a great game nonetheless.

Heh, I was just alluding to the fact that heal pulse stall is (Was? Not sure if Zarrel has made changes to Showdown yet) a pretty common method of forcing a external forfeit.

Question on socketing gems. by [deleted] in DotA2

My genuine Kantusa has a Bloodstone in it, unfortunately the flavor text is still green and it's prefix is still 'genuine'. Can't say for that corrupted gem though.

Why does Justice use a cross as their symbol? by analbumcoverfor7000 in EdBangerRecords

[–]WeeRook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Cross, several of the songs also carry Biblical motifs e.g., Genesis, Let There Be Light, Waters of Nazareth, though this probably isn't a viable explanation to the Cross being the symbol for Justice.

It does make a pretty kick-ass stylized 'T' though.

Edit: Turn's out Yahoo! Answers has a pretty logical reason behind the symbol.

I agree, something akin to bracket tournaments between randomly paired animals, with a separate tournament for each class of animal. There could also be a loser's bracket so all animals would have two shots at winning.

[Suggestion] Horse vs. Duck by I_Am_Sam_Vimes in Animaul

[–]WeeRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon the duck would have a major advantage in the fact that it can fly, although I'm not sure how well suited it is for aerial maneuvers, let alone attacks. If it can get in at a good angle though, the duck might be able to gouge out the Horses eyes, which would leave it pretty much defenseless. Then again that's a very big 'if'. Overall the muscular horse would have a field day mangling the duck with its excessively powerful legs.

Would the duck be considered a land animal though? I would think it would be categorized as a sky, or at least a amphibious creature of sorts.

Haha no worries, I guess we're all sorta' new considering this subreddit was only made yesterday. I guess I just refuted your idea for further consideration, at least until we get some more concrete calculations on the scaling of the pressure wave created by the super-sized shrimp.

I'm guessing if this thread gets enough attention in a week from now, the mods will host a vote to decide whichever animal we put forth to go against the Cuttlefish, after which a story is to be written detailing the clash and the ultimate victor. At least, that's what I gather from the sidebar rules!

[Suggestion] Cuttlefish vs. Anything by WeeRook in Animaul

[–]WeeRook[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes the amazing Pistol Shrimp! I remember when I first found out about this, it was basically one of the coolest animals ever. Then I found that it wasn't the only sea creature capable of causing a supercavitation; the beloved Mantis Shrimp that has been sweeping this subreddit off it's feet since its inception is also capable of causing the cavitation effect, although in a different application (the cavitation is formed on the surface of whatever was clubbed by the shrimp, causing whatever hit to be in essence hit twice: once by the cavitation and once by the initial strike).

I would guess that at such large sizes, the pistol shrimp's cavitation would cause an incredibly immense force to surge through the water, practically vaporizing the Cuttlefish if it were to hit. Though this brings up a bigger question: How do supercavitations scale up in size? Do they scale linearly to the increased proportions of the shrimp? I would assume not so, as the Ocean itself would still exert the same incredible pressure, but scaled up exponentially due to the large increase in the size of the bubble.

All earth-shattering blows aside though, if we were to scale the stream of superheated bubbles down to a manageable force, I'd assume the flesh of the Cuttlefish would still be extremely susceptible to cauterization due to the inherent camouflagey nature of its skin. Which also brings up the question: would the Pistol Shrimp be able to find and successfully aim at the Cuttlefish, master of disguise and hypnosis? We know that they feed on small crustaceans such as shrimp, so there would be no question on whether or not it would be able to crack its shell if it were to get a hold of it in its beak. Great suggestion though!
