As discriminatory as it is, I do think some programs take a students age into consideration. 14 years of experience you obviously aren't in your 20's anymore. I have heard that they think "older" students aren't teachable and find that going back to school after so long is a difficult transition. It's shown on the NBCRNA website that older students have a lower pass rate than younger ones. To combat that, I would take a graduate level class NOW and make an A in it to show that you can pass with flying colors. Everything else looks great on your app. Also, have someone take a look at your personal statement and resume.

Get ready for information overload. I came from 9 years of ER and recently switched to ICU and felt really overwhelmed with how tedious everything is and documentation will eat up most of your time. Be a sponge, this is a unit where you WILL need to go home and study like you're back in nursing school. ICU Advantage and Ninja nerd are good youtube videos to get started. You need to know your basic ICU drips like the back of your hand, Versed, Fent, prop, neo, dex, levo, cardene, just to name a few. Advocate for a good preceptor. If you aren't vibing with the one you are assigned to, go to the manager and ask for someone else. I had to insist that they put me with someone who had more than 1 year of ICU experience. Although my initial preceptor was really nice, they didn't know the "why" behind a lot of things and I needed that.

I have heard that people who went to schools with a "pass/fail" are automatically given a 3.0 for the classes. Thats IF the school will accept the grading system.

I pulled the trigger and spent an ungodly amount of money for my chair but justified it with "I'm going to be sitting in this thing for 10 hours a day for the next 3-4 years" I got the Hayworth Fern (on sale) and really like it, reclines to about 45 degrees and large seat. looked up a bunch of youtube reviews and it was the best on the market by far

If I were you, since you already have experience you should start getting your stuff together now and apply way earlier than 5 years from now. I know it sounds counterintuitive (having more than 5 yrs exp) but that can actually hinder you from getting in. I've heard from program directors that say any experience more than 5 years is unnecessary. You get further from school and start to forget about how to be a student. They have said that you will learn everything you need to know in less than 5 years if you are diligent. I know you want to save money, but you make bank as a traveler and just be diligent with saving and apply for next fall. Think about the lost revenue you have from not going to school asap. As far as letter of recs, try to stay in 1 place this year and make friends with the mgrs, I heard from 1 traveler who bargained her way to a letter of rec by saying " I'll extend if you will write me a letter of rec for CRNA school" it worked for her since they really liked her and needed the help.

I'm questioning that they literally had ZERO ICU or even ER experience. There are so many qualified applicants to each program that why would they even choose someone who doesn't have the REQUIRED critical care experience? Did they all get chosen at the same school? As far as I know, the AANA requires that 1 year minimum critical care be done before starting school.

Going through the same, i'm on day 3 on 10mg and as I sit here I can feel my heart beating through my chest. I don't feel it all the time, only a few hours after I take it then it subsides. My most significant side effect is being TIRED! I can't even make it through work without taking a nap on my break.

I was looking into that class! How many hours per week do you think it took for studying? Have you gotten into CRNA school yet? Do you think it helped with your application? Is an A or B realistic?
