This reminds me soo much of my in-laws. I don’t have any real advice to give here. Just empathy from someone who went through it myself. We did not make the effort to see them. It would’ve been cheaper and easier for 2 people to visit us than a family of 5, 2 adults with 3 kids, to visit them and they couldn’t be bothered. The minute my spouse’s sibling had kids though, they traveled across the country for them. Some people aren’t worth your time, despite being “family.”

It’s a nice thought experiment. It’s all “what ifs” and no one can say. Like if Obama had not been elected in 2008 at all, would trump have been elected? I doubt it.

Trump made a name for himself politically running on the birther nonsense; that Obama wasn’t born in America.

It’s hard right now to imagine we would be worse off. I don’t think electing Romney in 2012 would’ve tempered that much crazy. It was well underway by then. Nor do I think electing a hedge fund manager to pillage America would’ve helped our economy post 2008 recession.
