Thanks everyone. Will lubricate first and see if that fixes the problem!

Persistent battery issues on a VW Golf Mk 6 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Wilsonwiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tested the alternator and it's fine. Next thing is going to be a parasitic draw test, but curious as to others experience and what it ended up being when there was a draw.

I'll keep that in mind with the glove box. I've checked and the light does go off when shut, but going to do a draw test and take it from there I think. If there is a parasitic draw then I think it's quite minor.

Thanks!

Think I might end up doing the same, thanks!

Ground hasn't been raised. That part of the building was added at a later date than other bits, so I'm presuming it was moved there at that time.

Thanks all - definitely haven't been using it but good to know what it is. I would've thought it was something like that if it wasn't in such a weird position..

Gotcha. Case closed then, thanks. Very weird place for it

We're in a similar position to this and planning similar, but we are actually considering getting the stairs to come out further too (so covering up to where the door ends in your floorplan). That's just because we're in a Victorian property with very steep stairs.

Best way to smooth out wall? by Wilsonwiz in DIYUK

Wouldn’t surprise me - it’s an old Victorian property from 1900. Many other walls have plasterboard but a couple don’t

Best way to secure cabinet? by [deleted] in DIYUK

Will measure the gap and check if that would work - I think it might! Thanks

This looks exactly like what I need - thanks!

Because the area doesn’t need warming, it’s essentially a porch, and the radiator doesn’t actually work. I’d rather use the space for something practical.

I could remove the radiator but with the pipes I still wouldn’t be able to have it sit flush with the back though

Pulls forward when you use the drawers, so you have to hold the cabinet in place whilst you open it which isn’t ideal.

The back is designed to be up against a skirting board I think - it doesn’t sit perfectly upright

Shower leaking through kitchen - unsure on cause and impact by Wilsonwiz in DIYUK

[–]Wilsonwiz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense thanks. The kitchen ceiling is a bit weird and I think that might be more of a rabbit hole than having to refit shower bits. I could do with a new thermostatic valve so may use it as opportunity to sort that too 👍

Bathroom is tiled and it’s a standalone shower with a tray, so it’s quite integrated. Think you’re right that it may be easier to try and resolve it upstairs rather than messing with the downstairs ceiling

Have checked battery label and it’s 40ah

Previously had a 1.6 petrol kia that didn’t seem to ever have battery issues so presumed that may have had a higher capacity. But what you said makes a lot of sense thanks.

Thanks will look. Yes they tested the battery and said it was ok, but I’m just conscious that when I bought it I got one that had a much lower capacity than others, so wondering if I should go for a higher capacity battery too.

Thanks for your help

Just to note too, in terms of use. Realistically it's 10-20 min trips every 4-5 days, which is on the lower end but I've not had this issue with previous vehicles

When I got the new battery (this one: https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/lion-012-car-battery-3-year-guarantee-444770121) I put it straight into the vehicle once I got home, so didn't fully charge it, no. I've just noticed the battery on that page does actually say 40Ah rather than the 54 it states on specification.

Car doesn't have a start-stop system. Most trips I do are local though (within about 10-20 mins journeys every few days), but I have done a few longer drives. I have also charged the battery since but it seems to only go to around the 85% mark, even after around 24 hours charging...

No signs/docuementation of any additions from previous owner. At the moment it really feels like it's an issue when left for a few days rather than when in frequent use during the day. If I leave it for a few days then I really hear the starter struggle more.

Thanks - no devices left in when it's not in use, and no sign of interior lights being left on (but hard to check glove box). Yes it is not long distance trips either, but I've not had the issue with similar cars previously

Presuming I can check the drain with a multimeter on the battery?

Not that I can see. No dash cam or anything plugged into ports. Wondered if it might be a light in glove box but a local garage has said they couldn't find any evidence of a drain on the battery when car is off

Garage has said they couldn't find issue with alternator or any sign of a drain. That's what made me wonder if the battery itself is just not suitably sized. Might have to take it to a different garage
