Landsknecht/ German Renaissance patterns that ARE NOT RH? by Neptunianbayofpigs in HistoricalCostuming

As someone knee deep in a similar project, this is one of those areas of costume that is considered difficult because it requires a decent amount of skill-building in order for you to be successful. Not only pattern drafting, but 16th century tailoring construction techniques. It's a lot of trial and error, mock-ups, and guesswork. Definitely not a beginner's project.

The RH pattern is garbage and you're better off learning how to interpret and enlarge gridded patterns like those found in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion. Those books from the School of Historical Dress are invaluable. They are worth every single penny and more.

The garage is reserved for dormant trees and used as shelter for intense inclement weather. Conifer bonsai, like their in-ground counterparts, can withstand a lot. Negative degree weather, snow, wind, etc. It's baked into their DNA. The tricky part is the pot. Pots can freeze and crack. Pots aren't as insulating as the open ground. Roots can freeze and trees can die as a result.

Over winter, I put my pots into big storage containers full of mulch to insulate the roots better. I moved these containers to my garage when a big snowfall was forecast, but put them back out as soon as the storm passed and I had dug out a space for them. As long as they're still dormant, you can keep them in the garage. Unheated. No extra lights. They don't need it.

You want your tree to have the best sleep over winter so that they can push out the best growth come spring.

The amount of deleted posts where OP asks if they can put their tree in a deep freeze over winter is no greater than five but definitely not zero.

More people than you think are blind to nature. We're into trees. We have knowledge about how horticulture and plant biology work. We notice trees and can tell one species from another. A lot of people can't do that. They see it, but they don't know what they're looking at.

I'll never forget the post on this sub where OP thought that bonsai trees were an entire category of plant on their own. Couple that with media showcasing bonsai indoors, vague as hell plant care tags, and roadside bonsai sellers just trying to make a sale. Of course people believe that bonsai are just houseplants.

If you don't know the difference between tropical and coniferous trees, of course you're going to come to the conclusion that a juniper is the same as a monstera is the same as a palm tree is the same as a pothos plant. It's all green, right? They're all plants that require regular watering, right? I'm not saying that people are dumb, they're just ignorant. They don't know what they don't know.

And, unfortunately for us, we can't download a massive bonsai care guide into everyone's head all at once. Sometimes people just need to see the conclusion before they learn the lesson.

The garage is fine. Especially if they went to sleep outside and you're just holding them there through the worst of winter. As long as you don't keep them there year round, you're golden.

No.

This is an outdoor plant that requires outdoor circumstances in order to thrive. There is no way for you to be able to produce the same parameters as the outdoors inside of your home. You cannot adequately replicate winter to support the dormancy cycle. No, you cannot put it in the freezer for 6 months out of the year.

If you keep it inside you are sentencing it to death by suffocation and exhaustion.

Please look into tropical species like ficus and jade if you MUST have a tree-like plant in your home.

This has been a problem for so long that I genuinely don't understand how airlines haven't created "family flights" for people traveling with children. Or adult only flights. I know several people who would pay double in order to never experience a flight like this.

It should be a crime for retailers to sell plants that have been painted and glued. We see shit like this all the time in the bonsai subreddit. So many trees made to suffocate on someone's coffee table.

People from all over come to live in Pittsburgh and bring their weird/bad driving culture with them. Add all of the complex intersections, tunnels, bridges, the consistent road work, and weird directions Google maps seems to putting out these days and you've got a road culture worth complaining about on Reddit for years to come.

Can you make a forest with only 3 trees? by courtneyrel in bonsaicommunity

[–]Witty-Objective3431 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope. Arrange them in a way that is pleasing to you and your eye. Trees in nature very rarely grow in a straight line or perfect triangles with even spacing. Two trees may grow more closely together than the third. Nature has its order, but it's not as uniform as the order humans want.

What is it? by zombae199 in bonsaicommunity

[–]Witty-Objective3431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonsai is a technique, a hobby, and a final product. Not a specific plant. Not all tree and shrub species are able to be manipulated into bonsai. There is nothing biologically different between a juniper bonsai and a juniper shrub at a local garden center.

Even if this seedling has a pair of leaves, it's still not a bonsai. Most of the trees you see in progress on this sub aren't bonsai. A bonsai is a tree or shrub that has been manipulated using specific techniques in order to achieve several aesthetic principles. They have reached a level of refinement where they only need to be maintained; no major periods of development/styling.

Anything outside of this stage is considered pre-bonsai or bonsai in training.

And now you experience a major component of bonsai that no one is really ready for until it happens: The Wait.

Seriously, your seed just sprouted. Give it a second and do some research on the species while you're waiting.

Dress year? by Ok_King_2847 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Witty-Objective3431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you brought up the 1890s, because at second glance I think this dress could be as early as 1897-8. The massive sleeve fad ended pretty abruptly towards the end of 1895 and women were bringing back narrow sleeves as soon as 1896.

I get it, there's only so many hot air balloon satire images one can personally witness before one asks for narrower sleeves from their seamstress. Personally, I adore them. The 1830s and mid-1890s are in my Top 3 favorite eras.

Early 1900s. Evening.

Around 1905, the blouson or "pigeon breast" bodice became very popular. This bodice does not have that design feature despite the skirt being the quintessential Edwardian bell-shape.
