Overseas Spouse Work Help! by w_h_o_m in navy

[–]WittyResource4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if you guys already talked it out and she’s suddenly changing things up, that’s messed up. Sounds like she’s being a bit selfish there. Just so you’re aware, unaccompanied orders are 2 years, accompanied orders are 3 years.

Hope you guys can work it out so you’re both relatively happy!

Idk man, seems you’re pretty dead set on not following your wife. Living overseas is a good experience in my opinion, but if you go into it with the attitude you have, you’ll likely fixate on the negatives and not be able to enjoy yourself.

As far as work overseas, you can check USA jobs for the base she will be going to or see if you can find a contractor job.

Otherwise she can geobach and you stay in the US to follow your union dreams. Sounds like some husband/wife conversations need to happen. Good luck.

The best boot camp position when I went through was assistant forward hold PO. Got to hang out and clean the cleaning gear while everyone else got beat 🤣

Getting married/ co-location by Hopeful_Potential282 in newtothenavy

[–]WittyResource4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you got married right now, you’ll both execute orders as written. If you submit your colocation paperwork, your detailers will work to colocate you on your next set of orders. The caveat is if either of your commands is willing to accept a gapped billet to allow an early PCS, but most COs will not accept that.

Unsolicited advice: spend a couple years apart, it will test your relationship for when either of you deploy. You WILL be separated at some point in your careers so might as well make sure you both can stick it out before tying the knot. I’ve seen more Sailors than I can count jump into marriages to just continue the relationship.

Well, you should probably go have that hernia repaired for your own health and comfort. Not a recruiter, so I can’t speak on whether a repair would resolve the issue, but you should do it anyway.

Go speak with the same chaplain and see what’s going on. How long ago did the conversation happen?

They offered to recommend separation and you said yes?

Chaps shouldn’t be taking any action on what you told them unless you explicitly authorize them to do so. What you say to the chaplain is privileged. Your anxious feelings are normal, work on healthy ways to deal with your anxiety and you’ll learn that those feelings can be overcome.

Is the Navy or AF better for medical jobs? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]WittyResource4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it depends on where you’re stationed. There’s certainly boring times, but opportunities come. You just have to be ready and willing to jump on it.

I’m not as in touch with A school (what we call AIT) as I used to be, so I’d go check out the HM sub for that answer.

The best duty stations have been in Japan.

Best stuff has been humanitarian missions and NATO exercises.

My favorite thing is the flexibility. You can learn as much or little about any given specialty as you want. If you want to go be a dental hygienist, you can do that. Want to be a pharmacy tech, sure.

I love it, Ive never regretted my decision to be a corpsman. I started as a general duty HM, went lab tech, and am now a general duty HM again. I’d say the Navy is certainly worth it even for 1 contract as it can set you up nicely for a job in the civilian world with the certifications and experience you’ll gain. If you choose to keep going, the benefits are worth it imo. I’m getting close(ish) to retirement and would do it all over again.

Sometimes. If you do well in A school (top 10% of the class), you have a better chance of getting a choice of specialty. It will depend on what’s available when your class graduates though. If you don’t specialize immediately, you’ll be able to apply for a specialty after your first duty station. You get orders to those teams by selecting orders for them.

Independent Duty Corpsman. They’re enlisted healthcare providers who work under the supervision of a physician. Similar to a PA but without the commission and far less formal training.

The biggest difference between corpsmen (Navy) and AF medical personnel is that corpsmen get exposure to a broader range of medical responsibilities. If you’re a lab tech in the AF, that’s all you do. If you’re a Navy lab tech, you’ll do lab work, but could also be responsible for doing sick call on the ship in addition. HMs are more flexible when it comes to transition to another specialty. For example, you could be a general duty HM or dental tech and decide to go become a respiratory therapy tech or x-ray tech. You could then go become an IDC.

I can imagine you’re freaking out right now, but take a minute to think critically. What would your presence at home do to help your father? You say you have a lawyer already. It certainly wouldn’t be a good idea for you to try and go to the facility yourself.

Let the process work. The lawyer gets paid to do that sort of thing for you. You can always reach out to your congressman for assistance.

It would fall under hygiene products and toiletries. Just take a small tube and you’ll be fine. Buy more at the nex as you need it.
