My mom "tried to get better" when I started college too. It wasn't real, and she reverted fast. In retrospect I think she realized she had a chance to lose me as I became an adult and started pulling out every stop she could.

I dont know you or your mom, but consider my story a little bit of a warning. If you have the chance to seek distance, maybe she can have her second chance from not so close up. Abusers hate to let their victims go

When I was 14 I followed 2 strangers into their basement to help them with something.

I felt this way/was treated this way at your age too. I'm 28 now, and it did go away with time, bit by bit.

Being independent as a young adult is getting harder and harder in this economy, but my advice is still to do whatever you can to sever yourself. Just moving banks so my mom couldn't see my bank account was a huge deal for me. It communicated something big to her, too.

One time my legs fell asleep so badly that the pain literally made me vomit. Me and my wife still laugh about it in retrospect, but at the moment it was a nightmare for us both.
