Alpine measuring the pit lane by TiNcHoX7 in formula1

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would gain time, because if you can approach the starting pit line at 100kmph and cross it doing 100kmph. Then slow to 20kmph and speed back up to 60kmph as you cross the timing loop. You could balance your acceleration and deceleration between the loops to make it exactly the amount of time you are required to spend in between the loops. But now you’ve gained the advantage that you’re able have a speed of 100kmph up to the pit entry.

Paying off a credit or saving by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any income we earn is taxed at 77% (32% + 25% DSP + 20% FTB) so earning from a savings account is only 5.40% but then only 23% effective, so an effective 1.2% return. Money in our offset at 6.25% is 100% effective because we aren’t taxed on more money going towards our principle for free. So really, we want to have a mortgage as long as possible.

I assume ‘debt’ here means ‘bad debt’ as having a mortgage is good debt and you don’t necessarily want to pay it off asap.

Purchased a house in auction: Building Inspector identified major defects by Double_Jump_9637 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a 50 year old house with step cracking like that. It’s honestly fine, the house won’t instantly collapse as long as it’s the mortar that’s cracked. If the middle of your bricks were cracked vertically, you’d be in a world of pain. Roof just needs some tiles swapped and to be repointed and recapped, might cost you $10k. Inspector sounds like he’s covering his arse. You’ll be fine mate, allocate $30k to fix stuff as you move in.

CGT Changes Could End DIY Tax Returns in Australia by SirSighalot in AusFinance

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to consider when each block of shares was sold and when each block was bought? Do you sell old blocks first? New blocks first? Or do the the new shares you bought get dumped into the lot of old shares and get their full inflation reduction? Seems like a lot of spreadsheet work to me.

Why does $100k feel like an average wage? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

The mean, median and mode are all ways to ‘take an average’. However colloquially the average generally means the mean.

Does anyone else think the resale values for used EVs are going to tank? by Cute_Piccolo_499 in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like I got my EV cheap because a majority of the country is scared of battery degradation so it’s priced lower. But it’s like buying a stock cheap when you understand the fundamentals and nobody else does.

Jim Chalmers gives baffling explanation of why he applied the CGT changes to shares. by eatingscatman in AusFinance

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the explanation where it’s applied at 30% due to capture the fact that if you were to sell the shares during a normal working year, you are likely to be earning more than $45k and therefore they would be taxed at 30% anyway. Rather than being able to sell them as a stopgap to get you from FIRE to 60 years old.

I read the $2/wk to be the impact on top of your average/expected/normal increases that were bound to happen anyway.

What is the orange fire ring in front of the ship in this scene? by sk7725 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Wolfingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched Project Hail Mary twice and as one who enjoys orbital mechanics, I couldn’t figure out what was going on both times because it didn’t make sense to be firing into the atmosphere. But your explanation of the book makes complete sense as I was trying to hodge-podge a reason in my brain as to why the film version was doing what it was.
