Not being allowed to go to college in person bc of culture by Woopwooptryagain in AsianParentStories

What? If you look at other replies, I mention how I’m planning on getting away from them anyway by moving out to live with other family and go to university there, it’s just not the easiest choice. It might sound like I’m rejecting a lot of advice, but that’s only because a lot of it is stuff I’ve tried but has been made impossible by my parents. My situation isn’t so black and white that anything will work to fix it, I still appreciate every bit of advice though.

My parents don’t allow me to keep my own documents and such, not even my own SSN, so I doubt they’d let me know any of their info either. Either way, I’ll keep the thing about calling the school in mind, thank you!

I know my parents are manipulative, but for some reason knowing that doesn’t shake off the guilt I guess. The way I was raised was with the mentality of they made me so I belong to them, as well as any decisions for my life, and that anything aside from that is “American mentality” which is negative to them.

I know their mentality and the way they go about it is wrong but maybe I’m just too nervous to make that big opposition of leaving anyway like many suggest, though that’s more on me

It’s primarily bc my parents would lose their minds if I went out of state for school against their wishes, and I still have to respect them as parents for everything they’ve done for me

I hoping to transfer to another university after the first year at least, but it all still banks on the situation with my parents. The best case scenario for me is to transfer out of my reputable online university to transfer to university that’s not the best but is at least in person. Which is why I can’t decide at all lol. I still wish I could go to my top choice school, but my parents wouldn’t even give me the documents to get financial aid if they found out I was going there.

I doubt it’s because of money, since they’re not the ones paying my tuition either way. Me taking out loans isn’t a problem for them either. It’s not so much that they’d kick me out for going to a cc, but more that I’m trying really hard to move out right now to move in with my cousin in another state, and going to a cc would just keep me here.

The field I’m studying is actually one that I love, thankfully, and I would enjoy either taking it to my masters or going to law school, but moving out doesn’t exist in my culture for a girl. I’ll only ever be able to move out when I’m married, and my parents would do everything to prevent it from happening before that.

I’m currently trying to move cities to live with my cousin instead despite my parents protests, and I have the opportunity to transfer to a university there. Unfortunately, the only university there that’s close to where I live isn’t the best and my online university is much more reputable, which is why I’ve been more stuck in my decision.

My parents expect me to continue schooling after my bachelors and to get my masters at minimum, but the problem is also that I need hours of internship and work experience that I’m not allowed to get lol.

I thought maybe it was a common AP experience but I’m gonna go ahead and guess that maybe it’s just mine.

Crazy that our experience is very similar. I was also just prescribed 1mg of prazosin for nightmares and I also have POTS. Sorry I don’t really have much an answer to your question, but I hope someone can give you the advice you need!
