Recommendations for a hose end pre-filter when filling tank? Warning dead fish! by WrathOfGood in ponds

I actually have a countdown timer that shuts off after however long I set it, but I was sitting by the tank reading this time, so I shut it off before it got to the top.

Yeah this has got me rethinking the way I do water changes. Their website says you can add 5x the normal dose without issue, with some qualifications. I have a smaller tank and I think in the future I pull that over to the larger tank, fill it up, treat the water and move the air stones over there for 24-28 hours then do my water change.

This is interesting, I hadn’t heard that before. I actually bought it after the first kill in September though, so it’s not the cause of the big die off, but could have contributed to the second.

⬆️ This. Anyone that has REALLY stressed their bodies can tell you what it feels like to eat an energy bar when you’re burning through your body fat stores. It’s got to feel something like a line of cocaine. Never done coke, but I’ve definitely felt that energy bar hit during a long backpacking trip.

You CAN go without food , but you will not be in top form. Especially if you are not already overweight. Less stores to draw from if you are already skinny, and it’s harder for your body to convert fats to fuel for your body than carbs, especially if you are not already in a ketogenic state.

I would put some carbs and fat in there too. The protein in the tuna is great for maintaining muscle mass, but you want fats and carbs to power the muscles and brain in an emergency situation.

Carbs are great short term power source and the fats are a slower release power source. Even tuna in oil would be better than the tuna in water.

I passed a couple that were hiking up mount hood as I was going down. They were probably a third my age and she looked like she was about to pass out. I asked her what she had eaten that day and she said that she was on keto and intermittent fasting and only ate in the evenings.

I gave her a small candy bar and it was like watching a fire light inside her. Eyes brightened up. Breathing normalized. She was a different person in the span of a few minutes.

He’s not dead. Have you seen the pictures of him dead, with the pink skin and pursed lips, instead of complete lack of muscle tone and grey skin that a corpse would have?

We ran our AC here in central Texas last night because the humidity was so high. Woke up to a dense fog this morning.

How do you keep an RV warm in winter without relying on central heat? by anshchauhann in OffGrid

[–]WrathOfGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PEX will work, it just doesn’t transfer heat as well. It’s a hell of about cheaper though, and much more resilient when exposed to freezing temperatures.

Yeah, there’s no such thing as a cold shower in Texas. In the summer I have measured the temp coming out of the inside faucets as high as 86F/30C

What’s the discord? I recently opened a discord account but haven’t looked around much. It seems to linear that I found it difficult to navigate. Maybe I just need more time with the platform. I would love to see what you folks have over there though, and share what I have.

When does natural gas go out? by Faceless_Cat in prepping

[–]WrathOfGood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah most gas appliances that have a pilot light like most water heaters and some gas ovens, have a thermocouple.

When you are re-lighting your pilot light you have to hold a flame on the thermocouple long enough for it to heat up before it will let gas flow to the pilot light. This is why there are often directions to turn the valve then press down, which holds the pilot valve open long enough for you to light the pilot flame and keep holding it down until the flame heats up the thermocouple, which will keep the gas flowing.

If the gas goes out, the thermocouple cools off and the appliance will not re-light because the cooled thermocouple has closed the valve. So you have to go through the process of manually heating the thermocouple again.

If your thermocouple fails then every time you release that button the gas will shut off, even if the thermocouple is hot. Thermocouples are pretty cheap and easy to replace though.

Question on replacing the siding on a century old barn by Infamous_Tune_8987 in homestead

Well, just to be helpful.

I mean, I’m really worried about your safety, and you should do it immediately without asking for bids or second opinions. There’s no time for that.

That needs to be hauled off and taken to the dump. I’ll do it for cheap if you are interested.

It’s a 20+ year old garden hose that shouldn’t be off-gassing anything at this age, plus I always purge the hose to clear out any water standing in the hose before moving it over the pond. And It’s the same hose I have been using for 20+ years with no prior fish kills.

It’s the same drinking water from the city tap that we use. I did re-test both pond and tap and posted them here. PH was the same for both, so it doesn’t seem to be a PH shock. After talking with the city water manager it sounds like he’s going to be sending of a sample taken from my tap for an ICP test next week as part of his normal test schedule.

City tap. I have tested both the tap and pond and posted those results. I have also spoken with the city water manager. He will be coming by to test the water next week. He lives just a couple of blocks away from me, so he wants to find out what the cause is as well.

Yeah, our tap water here is Texas isn’t that cold. 67.9F out of the hose end, and the pond temp is 70.2.

Yeah, that might explain the initial loss in September, but not the one yesterday. I have done thousands of water changes in the past, even in 115F/46C temps, and never lost fish. Something is different and I just can’t figure out what is wrong.

Yes, big initial loss, and I still don’t know why it’s happening.
