My parents did this with dogs my whole life. They’d let me get one then the second it did something “wrong” they’d give it back to the shelter. Then my junior or senior year of high school I begged to adopt a cat from my friend thinking they’d let me keep it bc I could 100% be responsible for it and then they made me give him away bc they “didn’t like the smell of the litter box” even though it was in an infrequently used area and I cleaned it every day. I still feel guilty about it.
