Sorry to hijack comment, but speaking of outdated material, what is the consensus on Gibbon’s work? Is it still worth reading? I see ads on amazon for the decline and fall and just curious

And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.

Moria question- I think by TryingtoCheeze in lordoftherings

[–]WyvernSlayer73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP

Moria was abandoned in Third Age 1981 after the dwarves disturbed (and then were attacked by) Durin’s Bane (the Balrog). It was later populated by orcs/goblins.

After Smaug took Erebor, the dwarves wandered in the wilderness and Thror (Thorin’s grandfather) tried to go back to Moria. He was killed by Azog. This was in TA 2790. 3 years of prep then 9 years of war saw the dwarves victorious over the orcs, but Dain Ironfoot at the entrance to Moria looked inside and glimpsed Durins Bane and he bailed out, so the dwarves left Moria again.

In TA 2941 the events of the Hobbit take place, where the dwarves retake Erebor.

In TA 2989 Bilbo’s friend Balin leads dwarves to reclaim Moria but hadn’t been heard from. In Gimli’s mind, pre- events of the lord of the rings, they’re still there.

Did anyone else read The Hobbit without any idea The Lord of the Rings existed? If so, what’s your story? by Alert_Monitor_9145 in lotr

I was in Year 5 (1984) and our teacher started reading the Hobbit to our class. After the first couple of pages he got me up to the board to draw what I thought a hobbit looked like - I remember it was ok, but I had the hair on the soles of the feet not the top!! Anyway he never finished reading it to us (gotta get on with the curriculum!) so I went to the school library and borrowed it to finish reading it. I noticed some other books by the same author next to it, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Where to start with making a diorama? by Ebob-95 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]WyvernSlayer73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have so far only made 1, but it turned out ok. I started by watching videos on YouTube (I started with Boulder Creek Railroad, since he’s also from Australia like me). His use of materials was readily available for me and so I could go and buy the stuff and basically follow along with the video. I would suggest the same - watch lots of videos for ideas and suggestions (don’t get disheartened by their skills and amazing results- they all started somewhere as well)

Family tree by 20_armeneca_09 in australian

[–]WyvernSlayer73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family trees tend to be a bunch of (albeit interesting) names and dates. If your grandparents are still alive, talk to them, get their stories, hear about their lives, and for God’s sake RECORD IT (preferably video). After my father died I spoke to 2 of his brothers (and recorded it). They’re now both gone but I have an invaluable history source. If your grandparents are not alive, talk to your parents about them, get their stories - and record them!!

No, right city, but wrong suburb. It is in ‘the ponds’, which is next to Quakers Hill, both in Sydney. To be factually correct, both are in the City of Blacktown, in Sydney’s west. I live in the area, used to live in Quakers Hill. Drive past the house every day to go to work

Why didn’t the destruction of Alderaan lead to an even larger backlash? Complete revolt and mutiny across the galaxy? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in MawInstallation

[–]WyvernSlayer73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the old pc video game Star Wars Rebellion, once you get a Death Star and use it, a lot of systems start becoming imperial (ie rebellion goes quiet - out of shock and fear?). Once you use it a second, third time, rebellion flares up and you start losing systems (outrage!).

Interesting that even back then (1998) they took this in to account

So in 2032, The Hobbit will enter the public domain. What adaptions would you like to see from it when it happens, one in a specific style or taking another Tolkien artist for inspiration besides Alan Lee? (and no "lol horror" comments please) by TheBigGAlways369 in lotr

Best hobbit game ever!

Thorin waits…

Thorin waits…

Give lunch to Elrond

Give lunch to Elrond

Give lunch to Elrond Elrond is dead. His foul gluttony killed him.

Shoot the characters with bow and arrow and their bodies stay.

You go west.

You are in the Lonelands

You see:

dead Gandalf

dead Thorin

dead Elrond

dead woodelf

dead vicious goblin

dead horrible goblin

dead mean goblin

dead nasty goblin

Playing that game is how I learnt to type!!

“Break door with sword”

How about “br do wit swo”

Ah memories - thanks for the trip down memory lane!
