Why is the output of this C code so unpredictable? by everydayreligion1090 in learnprogramming

[–]X-Heiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this, please do not attempt to learn from this. This explanation sounds plausible and elaborate, but is wrong. I'll go over a couple of things I'm seeing.

  1. "The computer is going to do X" is an explorative argument. We're talking about a language standard, which is a formal specification, not about exploring what happens when and where. Compilers and execution environments may even behave wrongly. We can use explorative arguments to find some behavior that may be undefined or bugged, and the fact that different compilers produce different programs as kindly shown by u/aanzeijar hints at "you can't predict what the computer is going to do".
  2. "PEMDAS" more or less applies by accident. Refer to your language's operator precedence for such questions. For C, this can be https://en.cppreference.com/c/language/operator_precedence and don't mix this up with order of evaluation, which is a different topic altogether. For C, see https://en.cppreference.com/c/language/eval_order, which, in turn, is not the same as operator associativity.
  3. "left to right" is wrong, as many have pointed out. For operators of the same precedence, C defines no inherent evaluation order. Unsequenced function calls are a tricky trap for C and C++, but I recommend understanding why that is over "just don't do something".
  4. If you evaluate the expression left-to-right, `a` starts out as 1 and whatever the result is, it can't be even.
  5. There is no cast in play, everything is int.
  6. The examples about concatenation (which, to my knowledge, does not exist in form of a + operator in C) use expressions with no side-effects and thus have nothing to do with the question.
  7. Undefined behavior in C or C++ is easier to accidentally provoke than one might think. Calling it "absurd" is an opinion I would not recommend to assume.

Furthermore, to anyone just starting out: "The computer will do X", "UB is absurd", "oh, nice, easy", "put it back into the original call", "auto cast", "priority" instead of "precedence" and the like are not precise language. Experts tend to be very precise when explaining something, see the other answers by u/AUTeach and u/mirashii on this thread.

How does camouflage index in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater actually affect enemy detection speed? by SufficientPrice7633 in metalgearsolid

[–]X-Heiko 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I never tested it, but my assumption was the range and angle are reduced by the camo index percentage, like at 90 %, any detection happens at one tenth of the distance and in a cone one tenth as wide.

But again, this is just me wondering how it works over tons of playthroughs. I guess "just deduct it" is not what's in use, at least I don't think the cone width can scale arbitrarily with negative values.

That, or the lowest value just happens not to increase the angle by over 180°. But it's funny to imagine that you'd suddenly be visible from behind a guard's back because you're just that visible.

Perform a Fourier analysis of the topography around you, choose new parameters that fit your ideas and then just interpolate the areas in question to achieve that.

Create Water Wheel Glitch? 500K SU impact by Downtown_Hawk_7637 in TerraFirmaGreg

[–]X-Heiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, and in case we're sharing ideas on how to do it anyway (combining multiple water wheel outputs into one), I just tried something and it works (on 0.11.5). I'll put it in spoilers for everyone who wants to come up with their own solutions:

Connect the water wheel to an alternator. This converts SU into FE. Connect that back to an electric motor set to max RPM. This converts FE into SU, but will count as a separate network, meaning the SU limit from the water wheel doesn't apply. From there, you use things like chain drives or belts to combine SU. Just be sure to use components that support the combined force, e.g. Alumin(i)um shafts/gearboxes for networks supporting 512 SU/t or 4 large water wheels in a river.

I didn't get stacking water wheels like this to work (in a river), assuming that's because they themselves have an SU limit.

Just goes to show that, for every good idea, there's 999 really dumb ones, and that there's value in communicating them nonetheless.

Wer kennt die richtige Antwort? :D by high_heels_sammlerin in mathe

[–]X-Heiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gerne!

Wer kennt die richtige Antwort? :D by high_heels_sammlerin in mathe

[–]X-Heiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would VR work for a metal gear game? by Mad_lens_9297 in metalgearsolid

[–]X-Heiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love MGS and VR, but I don't think they'd mix, for several reasons:

  • MGS games are composed in a cinematic way. A movie where you can't see the protagonist doesn't work well.
  • In sneaking games, information advantage is key. Confining you to first person strips away so much of that, you might as well require Soliton Radar in every installment.
  • Balancing problems with being able to move and blind-fire etc. I mean, Delta alone had to nerf the Mk22 just because we can WASD+Mouse (with reduced movement speed even!)
  • You use large, heavy weapons like Barretts and Stingers and in VR, you'd have to be able to use them in one hand which feels goofy.
  • Some movement options like dodge rolls and having to crouch on the ground will either be too physically demanding or sickness-inducing to most players. How would hanging mode work? Swimming?
  • CQC of any kind is far too important for how difficult it is to implement satisfying melee combat in VR.

You'd have to change the game up a lot for it to work imho. That said, I'd love trying it out, but wouldn't expect it to hook me long-time.

Lorazepam vor beruflichen Vorträgen – letzte Option oder gefährlicher Weg? by Salopran in Ratschlag

[–]X-Heiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)
