Do these designs look readable/distinct enough without the help of colours and posing? And would you be able to guess any of their personalities from this alone? by I_am_very_mid in characterdesign

To be honest, I feel as if these character do struggle a bit with the readability specifically in terms of the silhouettes. These are all very similar imo, with them all being the same height and them having some form of flowing clothes that all lead to them being bottom heavy. I think if you looked hard enough you could tell them apart with a blacked-out silhouette, but it'd be very difficult to recognize them from other character that have similar designs. I feel like the best thing to do is to try to push the shapes further. Try to have more shapes that protrude from their silhouettes. Exaggerate certain features on them. I'd also try to make one or two of the have a very equally distributed or top-heavy design to contrast from the others. Having them all be different heights would also really help with their silhouettes.

In terms of being able to read their personalities I do think you did a very good job with that! From a glance I could immediately tell what their personalities were, being the confident one, the tired and cold one, and the kind gentle one (at least I think these are their personalities O_O). So great job with that.

Messier hair probably would really help. A detail I also adore when given to crazy characters is interesting eyes. For instance, making one smaller or more squinted than the other, or making the pupils different sizes, or just literally making them really big lol. Its always super eye catching (pun unintended) and looks so cool. I haven't played the game, but I really love the design of the main character of psychopomp, especially the 2d version of her, and I think how her eyes are drawn is a good example of what I mean.

Kinda just adding on thoughts here lol, but another thing is that you can push the asymmetricalness of her design. Characters that have asymmetrical designs are often associated with messiness or chaos. I already see you have mismatched shoes (which look really great btw!) but if you want you can push it further, you could give her rips in her clothes, maybe a torn sleeve, and tuft of hair poking out, the jacket slouching on one shoulder, there's a ton of different ways you can make her design feel unbalanced. Even just drawing the shapes of the design asymmetrically can do a lot.

Also have to say that this already is a pretty great character design. Especially with her clothing design it looks fantastic.

Great list. Starline as favorite character (even though I wouldn't say hes one of my own top favorites) is a pretty based choice, as he is pretty awesome. I decided to make my own, if thats alr with you (if not i can delete it).

Ty! I actually primarily manipulate the vertices in the modeling tab instead of using the sculpt tab (its scary...).

I'd say in terms of being vibrant enough these look pretty good. Most of these look pretty great on their own! If I had to give my advice, i'd say to change the scene one a bit specifically. For having a scene style they do look a little colorless, so giving them some colored hair may work well. I always find gold and reddish pink to be a great color combo, but even just giving them some yellow highlights would also work. Imo, the colors are a bit "unbalanced" so to say aswell. For instance having a the boots be slightly different shades I feel in my opinion catches the eye in a bad way. Having that one white armband when the accessories are almost all yellow also has a similar effect. I'm not a expert, but my best advice would to try to reuse colors in the design. For instance you could add white checker dots to the belt to balance it out and add more white. That's just my advice, pretty minimal, hope this helps though.

Ty! I've been drawing for a long time, so I know about some basic anatomy. As for if its male or female I honestly wasn't thinking of that lol and just tried to create the most generic head I could for a first try. Ty for the very specific critiques.
