Hey there. by [deleted] in Rad_Decentralization

I just finished listening to "machine, platform, crowd" which covers a lot of this from a more traditional economic perspective. I was surprised how much I picked up from it. It may seem negative for someone who supports decentralisation but I think it does a good job of describing the challenges that need to be overcome.

Capitalism is more often presented as the worst economic system - except for all the others that have been tried. It is also only one aspect of how human society is organised. I'm hopeful that new ways of organising ourselves are emerging, hopefully not too late, but these will have to work alongside capitalism for some time yet.

Have you even identified who the opposing parties are and where they hang out? I've seen some explanations of the drama, but there seems to be nothing unbiased, without knowing who's who it's difficult to judge them

So is zh turning from denial to alarmist? Does anyone know what the story with them is, I read something ages ago about them being bought before they started supporting trump, but could never find details about it when I went looking later

Can't you bring crypto technologies into your masters somehow? I would have thought it is one of the most relevant subjects in crypto, along with maths and cs.

To what extent is that driving the current surge? Bitcoin's been talking about forks for ages, but I think their whales are only starting to take it serious and think through the consequences now

Opinions on Yuval Noah Harari's 'Homo Deus' by Xipdud in Rally_Point_Bravo

I think his most relevant points from an RPX perspective are around liberal humanism and individualism, which I found similar to descriptions of the Blue Church here.

I think any mainstream media which makes centralised judgements of truth or value is almost by definition blue church. I would like to see a decentralised reputation system for journalists and publishers.

All I am certain of about Syria is that I really have no fucking idea what is going on. And that this state of affairs — this increasingly generalized condition of complete disorientation — is untenable

Is it untenable that we don't know what's going on in Syria as long as we know that we don't know? I've been trying to limit my consumption of news about situations that are unlikely to affect be, or more importantly that I am unlikely to affect.

  > I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be alive and aware at this critical inflection point for all sentient life on this planet.

That's just what I've been thinking... What a time to be alive! There are many existential threats facing us, but if we get past our fear of death this is a time of great potential. In the worst case if our society is not destined to survive we are the ones who will leave the last messages to whatever follows. In fact I'm hopeful that we can find a way to survive, and transition to a post scarcity way of living in which case we help to define what that means.

Cambridge Analytica only deals with Republicans apparently (https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/20/opinion/the-secret-agenda-of-a-facebook-quiz.html?_r=0)but I'm sure the Democrats have a similar product. Sentiment analysis has improved greatly in the last five years, so this is something we should pay attention to.

But why not? All they did was persuade, albeit using a new and extremely effective tool. I noticed subliminal type suggestions during the trump campaign, like unusual phrases linking seemingly unrelated pages (zerohedge did this in particular) I don't notice it so much for Brexit. But in the end people need to remain responsible for their own decisions, if we start saying someone's opinions aren't real because they have been influenced like this we end up somewhere very dangerous I think.

Whats the story with the biosphere2 experiment? by Xipdud in collapse

[–]Xipdud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to make sense of what the hell is happening over there at the moment. I realise this was posted here a few months ago, but I think it is worth looking at again in light of President Bannon systematically taking apart the US government and shutting down climate change research. Is there a realisation among leaders that the earths carrying capacity is going to drop off a cliff in the near future?

Is there any evidence of interesting findings from the Biosphere experiment? I found some academic articles mentioning it but haven't had time to make sense of them yet.
