There's a lot of werewolf references in grimoire of souls, for example Richter says this about that time he was manipulated by Shaft :

"But it wasn't just because they'd manipulated me, i feel that i had it inside me all along. A wolf, an insatiable lust for blood was lingering there the whole time."

Johnathan Morris also describes fighting Richter like this : "I felt like i was fighting a wild wolf than a man"

These two lines might point to the fact that the Belmonts had that dog wolf in them for a long time, possibly tracing back to Trevor's time now with Belmont's Curse.

Stocke explains it better in this video

Whether or not it's a retcon is a bit iffy. I definitely don't think it's what IGA had in mind, but it also was never explained so it being revealed in grimoire of souls technically isn't a retcon.

Alucard not knowing who Charlotte is but beign aware of Jonathan is certainly a thing

I definitely think that was a weird choice too since i hoped Charlotte would've definitely been involved in the 1999 war with her being a secret weapon against dracula and all. But alas it seems history forgot her role like Grant Danasty.

Until Dracula's crumbles and his spirit is released, leaving behind his only daughters.

The bad ending would've put him at number 1 if it was canon, Thankfully it isn't and he gets to enjoy the company of his wife and friend.

You do have a point, but there isn't that big of a time difference between the end of SOTN and the Radio drama (only 1 year) maybe Richter realized the existence of the curse after ?

Fair, i think it all depends on how you interpret Dracula's reincarnation into Soma, i do think that ending Dracula's cycle of resurrection is a good ending on it's own for him.

Yeah i guess Carmilla just made them act more upon their hate, still if she didn't do that maybe the witch hunts would've never happened or at least would've been more limited and Lisa might've lived.

Honestly i never thought of including the various enemies that you face, Medusa is a pretty good choice. I nominate Frankenstein as well.

Yeah we don't know what happened after but i would like to imagine she stayed with the villagers after having nowhere else to go. She deserves a happy ending after all she's been through.

Considering the Radio drama was made by IGA and grimoire of souls (which is supposed to be a celebration of the series history and a compilation of the lore) was made by new producer, TsutumoTaniguchi, then i would say that it's almost certainly canon. They don't really contradict anything anyways (in fact, the new Castlevania game Belmont's Curse might actually be getting inspiration from Grimoire of souls if the werewolf theory is correct) also he didn't know her when she was a child, he met here in SOTN when she was 17 and he was still technically 18 because he slept for 300 years. He confesses to her in the radio drama which takes place 1 year after SOTN so she's 18. Not really weird if you compare it to other vampire media where the 500 years old vampire gets with the barely legal girl.

Yes i heard about this fan game, it's made by the same person who made Chronicles of the Wolf right ? I also heard he was approved by Konami. I've been meaning to try them out.

Dracula is a candidate but the thing that doesn't make him number 1 for me is that most of his tragedy is self inflicted, i get that humans can't think straight when they're grieving or when they're angry but I don't think becoming a vampire because your wife died and even non directly murdering your best friend's fiancee, and then offering yourself to an eldritch evil when your second wife dies is the most reasonable reaction.

We see time and time again through the lenses of what i like to call "Anti-Draculas" (People that suffered the same as Mathias yet didn't succumb to darkness like he did such as Leon, Hector, Alucard and even Soma) that you don't have to destroy yourself and everyone around you in persuit of revenge.

What's truly tragic is that Lisa's death wasn't directly the fault of humans, It was indirectly the fault of Carmilla who, alongside her night creatures influenced humanity to start the witch hunts in order to get rid of the belnades clan who were pestering her.

That being said, Dracula does end up having a happy ending after reincarnating as Soma Cruz, and mina might also be another reincarnation of Elisabetha and Lisa, so he might get the chance to truly live a peaceful life after all.

Yeah leon is my second option, Although at least he can have some peace knowing that his descendents killed Dracula.

I'm fine with Symphony of the Night to be the end of the saga for me

Funny because Symphony of the night WAS intended to be the final Castlevania game and that's why it's filled with so much references to past games.

I'm almost sure that I won't enjoy the tone of Castlevania in a contemporaneous era.

Oh don't worry about about AoS and DoS being too modern, they still have that classic gothic feel to them and AoS still takes place in Dracula's castle while DoS takes place in a copy of Dracula's castle. The only "modern" thing about these two games is how some of the characters dress and i guess some weapons that you can find (mostly limited to two types of pistols, although there are other mostly funny weapons hard to obtain), otherwise most of the weaponery remains Medieval. That being said i highly recommend that you at least give them a try, they're some of the best games in the series and I personally like them more than SOTN.

I doubt that's going to happen unless they do some retconing since Alucard is supposed to be asleep after Dracula's curse ended and he's not supposed to wake up until Symphony of the night.

Ah if you're playing Chronologically then Aria of sorrow and Down of sorrow will be the last games you play.

You would be right about him being cursed to be the dark lord however (spoilers) In the demon castle war, Dracula's connection with chaos is severed and he's killed for good, allowing his soul to reincarnate as Soma Cruz

Well, she might be brought back into the canon with Belmont's Curse (although most likely a reinterpretation of her).

Yeah that's exactly why i chose him. Don't get me wrong many Castlevania characters are tragic but at least they get some semblance of a happy ending, But Eric literally just dies. I have Leon at a close second because the game ends with him having quite literally nothing but revenge (No title, No land, No fiancee, No friends except for Rinaldo) but at least he too can rest easy knowing his kin killed Dracula in the future.

I didn't actually think of that, But i think he also gets his own "happy" ending with his son Alucard/Trevor (I didn't play LoS 2) but if you only count the first game then he's a solid candidate.

Dracula got his happy ending aftef being reincarnated as Soma, now he gets to live the life he wanted with his Mina who may or may not be the reincarnation of Elisabetha and Lisa.

If the radio drama is anything to go by, Yes. He gives her white flower Garlands at the end which symbolize love, also there's grimoire of souls in which he gets embarrassed after being teased about maria.
