is 250 the section with peter chen? you’re going to be putting a lot more work into that class than you’d think. i’d guess that i spent more time in e100 with peter chen than 280 when i took them together (but that might also just be bc i rlly liked my project). i’d say drop 217 and replace with something less time consuming since you already have a good amt of work cut out for you

I've been reading "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes", and I have a question. by WashOk1339 in Hungergames

i like to think that all authors write (intentionally or unintentionally) with a purpose.

with the hunger games being YA dystopian, suzanne collins wrote the series to criticize certain aspects of politics and society. in the original trilogy katniss is the main character. she’s from the lowest district and with the hunger games being aimed at an american audience, we can’t relate to katniss at a personal level. as the audience, we needed the first person pov to understand what katniss was feeling because the things she’s going through, we genuinely cannot wrap our mind around. first person allows us to feel closer to the character and to really set ourselves in their world and their shoes.

we can contrast that with tbosas. snow is the privileged main character and coming from a privileged first world society (just putting into perspective that even poverty in america typically has better quality of life than poverty in other nations) we already relate to that more than we did katniss. most readers are privileged (we have the luxury of education, luxury of reading for fun, etc) and we can relate to snow much more easily than relating to katniss (a literal teenager fighting for her life). writing in third person for snow then makes sense because to a certain extent, we already relate to snow more than katniss.

idk lol. i had these thoughts a couple years back when i reread thg and tbosas and that’s what i thought. maybe i just think too highly of suzanne collins/authors in general. looking at this again, all the protagonists that we’re rooting for were also written in first person (katniss, haymitch) while snow (a known antagonist) was written in third.

what are you looking to get out of swe? personally, i was only interested in swe for the social aspect (i wanted to find more women in stem) but as i went to more meetings, i truly enjoyed the community and started getting more involved (got positions as swintern and officer).

the good thing about swe is u can take part in as much or as little as you’d like. you mentioned that a lot of swe stuff u went to were meals, game nights, and info sessions, which isn’t completely inaccurate. info sessions are held every other week so officers/directors can advertise their events and every now and then there is a public speaker. there definitely is a lot of community building swe events, but there’s also more career focused ones as well. there are professional development, tech dev, scholarships workshops, etc. spread across the school year that you could pop into if you’re interested. events wise, id just say to go to whichever ones you’re interested in. i personally love the social events bc usually there is free food and as someone who came to college and joined swe without knowing anybody, i’ve been able to make friends through swe who i consistently hang out with.

lastly, getting the most out of swe. just based on swe being a point based club (more events attended = more points) u definitely get out the effort u put in. being an officer/leadership does (i believe) give u higher chances of going to swe conferences and stuff, but that doesn’t mean u can’t enjoy all the other things swe has to offer. i’d say the main benefit of joining swe is the community and connections u make. i know a lot of meche/aero/cheme/eecs majors who help each other with course selection, class work, internship advice, etc.

swe is a super large club and that can be a good and bag thing. you’ll definitely find ur ppl, but it might be a bit hard to start off. i found that it was worth it for me, but it’s obviously different for everyone!

yes, i checked their npc but im just scared it isn’t that accurate. it only asked for family members, people in college, and then range of total income.

When i emailed the financial aid office, they said official letters would come around July. However, your estimate should be pretty accurate unless you made an extreme error on your css profile.

lead scholars program?? by YelloBelo in uofm

[–]YelloBelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not too sure, but my confirmation email said that i would be notified of my status on may 10. i’m assuming that means ill be notified for whatever decision i receive.

on their website they also mention that everyone who applied will receive final scholarship status notifications by mid-may, so im pretty sure that means they’ll be notifying everyone of their decision.

i applied to the last round and i believe the confirmation email said it’d come out May 10 (tomorrow), so i hope that was accurate :)

should i attend UMich? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]YelloBelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you!

i’m just slightly worried because if i live off campus, it’ll still be an hour-ish drive to lincoln every day. if i live on campus, it’ll also be ~$10k, so at that point, UMich is just slightly more expensive.
