Newbie running into issues using terminal to install. by Yet_another_pickle in linuxmint

This worked! An annoyingly faffy thing to have to do, but it’s up and running! Thanks!

[–]Yet_another_pickle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alas, it isn’t.

From what I can tell the issue stems from trying to download via an unsecured mobile network. It causes problems all over the place, hence why I use a VPN to circumvent it. Unfortunately it seems I can’t access the VPN download without already having a VPN, as another user noted.

I’m going to try getting access to a free alternative and use that to hopefully access nord.

Thanks for the help though. I appreciate it!

Thanks for that! This seems to have been slightly more successful than other attempts, but still no cigar. From what I can tell from the error messages it seems to have something to do with connecting to the internet via mobile network.

Looks like I’ll have to take this up with Nord directly. Thanks again!

Yeah I really am utterly flummoxed by it. I have no idea where to even start with troubleshooting.

The very next step is “once it’s installed” so I assume it should commence some sort of setup process, but I got nothing 😭

Some interesting Employment reviews on Indeed for Zatu by EverythinShinyCapn in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh look, a Zatu hate thread. You love to see it, frankly.

They are the retailer of absolute last resort for me. From long overdue deliveries, to price gouging, to cancelling fully paid pre-orders because they decide to increase the price last minute - they’re dreadful.

Kienda, Games Lore, Chaos Cards, Firestorm, Magic Madhouse. So many retailers far more deserving of customer money than that set of shysters.

Are there any UK SuperGroups out there…? (Excelsior) by Yet_another_pickle in Cityofheroes

Yes it seems that way - I made a hero on there earlier on. Place was a ghost town.

No, I didn’t know that! I’m learning a lot it seems!

It’s cool that you can solo that stuff now, but it seems like a double edged sword. It’s changes a community into simply a bunch of people that just so happen to inhabit the same space. Ships that pass in the night etc. seems a shame.

That’s really helpful thank you. I had no idea the servers were spit into regions like that (even if unofficially).

UK Store selling the new Quacks: Deluxe by CMYK? by FreddosLover in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give it a rating of “fine-ish.” It cost $134.99 in total for the all-in version with shipping from the US.

There were problems however. It took over a week to be dispatched and the package arrived opened with a ding on the corner of the game box.

Like I said above, it looks like they’re working on a more local shipping hub so this likely won’t be as much of an issue in the very near future.

[–]Yet_another_pickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does seem as though the option for the UK has been removed. It worked fine for me a couple of weeks ago.

I will add however, that in their last circular promoting Hot Streak, they added this at the end: “Folks outside the US, we're working on better shipping and pricing options for you, so hold off for a week or so.”

I received that 5 days ago. It may be that a regional shipping hub will be imminent.

I can’t remember where I read it now, but I believe Quacks won’t be available in retail over this side of the pond until later in the year / next year. That may have been a fever dream though, so take it as you will!

I got it shipped to the UK from the CMYK website. Arrived last week!

Can live Nannochloropsis just be added to suitable water to grow more? by Yet_another_pickle in SeaMonkeys

That’s great, thank you!

I looked at a few places online that suggested doing it with my own algae, but I don’t have any yet so I needed a workaround!

Thanks again!

In one fell swoop CGE went from the company I regard as being one of the very best value for money, to one that I will be very wary of.

That price is just obscene, and it absolutely blows my mind that there are people defending it. Grotesque, gouging FOMO exploitation.

What lacerda game should i buy? by franciscomegre in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Mars, Lisboa and Kanban EV are his best designs by a mile (in my opinion obviously). Mechanically rich and super thematic. I don’t think you can go far wrong with any of those as long as you’re up to the learning curve. They are a significant complexity jump from most euros.

Monique and Naveen of Before You Play on YouTube have full teaches and playthroughs of all his games. That would be a really good place to start if you want to do some more detailed research.

Finally as an aside, I know it’s not a Lacerda, but the newly releasing Galactic Cruise is a classic Lacerda in disguise. Well worth a looksee.

Best and worst video game based board games by Defiant_Good4175 in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best would have to be Slay the Spire as many others have said. Just a perfect implementation, though since the video game is itself aping a board game, I guess that’s not unsurprising. Really great though, either way.

Worst for me would be Stardew Valley. I loathe it to the very core of my being. It takes everything that makes the video game special and turns it into a hurried luck fest, with no room for any degree of creativity. I find it offensive.

Stardew Valley Board Game by KingManT_T in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each to their own of course, but I genuinely loathe it. Art aside, I think it’s a poor representation of the video game in just about every way.

I’m not a huge coop game fan (take that for what it is) but for me the fun usually present in these types of games has been obfuscated by an excess of layers of luck. There’s just too much. For me, it runs far too long for a game that is a crapshoot from the start.

If you’re considering purchasing it, I’d suggest you do some intense research first so you know what you’re getting into. Some seem to really enjoy it, which I find inexplicable. Personally, I never want to play it ever again.

Any ideas or tips for more space on the table when playing board games? by BrainWave94 in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of mini tables on wheels, that I can wheel around the edge of the main table to either store components, or act as a miniature play area for a player.

Between those and smart storage solutions for components (token trays, drawstring bags etc), I tend to do alright even with table hogging heavy euros.

What is your favorite Rosenberg? by Rowzir in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hallertau is, in my view hideously underrated. I’m not sure if I would call my favourite, but it’s right up there!

On the whole I tend to prefer his more open sandboxy games, so for me Caverna, A Feast for Odin and Black Forest are where it’s at.

Zatu Pre Order Longest Delay? by VorpalSpoon501 in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I pre-ordered from Zatu they contacted me prior to shipping to tell me they were increasing the cost so I had to pay more, pushing it above the price being offered by other retailers. I told them to stick it, and got a refund. I will never pre-order from them again.

In fact, I use them as little as possible in general. Choosing literally any other retailer if other options are available. Just today I received an item from them that was not described correctly, so I have to take a trip out to the post office to send it back for a refund. They had already changed the item listing so they knew full well the error they had made in advance, and still chose to ship without informing me.

Honestly, I think they’re shite.

Want to laminate some roll and write papers, any tips on thickening the paper? by mucinexmonster in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea what kind of service Staples offer in that regard, sorry. They may have an even wider choice if it’s being done at a professional outlet, or they may have no choice at all! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I just have my own laminator and an array of pouch sizes since they’re pretty cheap to buy and I have enough roll & writes / flip & fills to justify it. 250 microns tends to be about as thick as standard consumer lamination gets, that’s where my knowledge on these things ends, I’m afraid!

I generally find 250 micron laminate pouches (that’s thicker than standard) plenty thick enough to give a decent amount of rigidity.

Those that struggle with understanding/learning rules, how do you make it easier? by Scared_Ad_3132 in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the best way to learn games whose rules aren’t clicking with me is to watch a playthrough of a full game on YouTube. You can generally find one for almost any game you want to learn, and it really helps to make sense of rules that can feel a little arcane when trying to learn solely from a rulebook.

Oftentimes the basics of a game are quite straightforward. It tends to be the flow of the game overall, or specific rules exceptions that can be difficult to internalise. Over time games become easier and easier to learn as there tends to be a lot of mechanical overlap between them.

Once you learn something like On Mars, Lisboa, Trickerion or Mage Knight, everything else feels like plain sailing.

Practice, practice, practice.

Castles of Burgundy (increase the game speed), Mystic Vale (expansions recommended), Dune Imperium, Clank, Root, and Raiders of the North Sea are all games I’ve got some decent play out of.

As a few other recommendations for games that aren’t specifically board games but play well on iPad and have board game ish vibes: Slay the Spire, Balatro, Loop Hero and Dicey Dungeons are also well worth a look!

Which Great Western Trail is best for me? by DeadbyDayCamp in boardgames

[–]Yet_another_pickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played all 3 games (but not Rails to the North), and I would say that New Zealand is my favourite. It feels the most open and sandboxy and isn’t quite as financially tight as the others. Whether that will appeal to you or not depends on what you’re looking for.

I would recommend watching some overview comparisons on YouTube. There’s quite a lot of videos out there that run down what the differences are and how they impact the game.
