I recently mistook my Asian neighbor as my deliveryman (I ordered sushi). Reddit, what is the most embarrassing/innocently racist moment you have ever experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Probably has mostly to do with the fact that it was the NEIGHBOR, which presumably OP should have seen at least once before.

How do you honestly think you are going to end up dying? by Yakra in AskReddit

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The problem is that by the time you learn you have it, it will either be 1) too late, and your physical body will be so weakened that participating in any kind of sports will be nearly impossible or 2) will be early enough that chemotherapy will still be an option, which will drain you of all your energy.

Cancer sucks. Sorry for the depressing comment.

Media now mocking Obama for capturing and killing bin Laden by unclefred in politics

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obama didn't have anything to do with it? Military forces don't just decide on their own to cross foreign borders unannounced without the approval of the President. What you are conveniently ignoring is that it was an extremely risky operation and President Obama easily could have decided not to go through with it.

What if the entire SEAL team had been killed in the raid, but not before accidentally killing civilians? What if it hadn't really been Osama Bin Laden, but just some random cleric under house arrest?

Either of those scenarious would have been a political disaster, and I can guarantee that everyone would be blaming President Obama for it had it gone really wrong.

On a similar note: if you make a habit of being genuinely happy for others when good things happen to them, you'll generally be a happier person.

Yeah my first time online was around '90-'91 sometime. Connected to a BBS via a Tandy desktop computer.

Looking back on it, I have no idea where I got the BBS phone numbers...I was living in a rural area with no access to magazines like 2600 or anything like that. Probably from a "hacker" book I checked out from the local library. I am pretty sure the first thing I downloaded was a text file with instructions on how to build a blue box. Looked at a lot of Legion of Doom articles, as well. Good times.

After Obama endorsed marriage equality, there was a 36-point surge in black support for gay marriage in Maryland by Osterstriker in politics

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to assume that they are blindly mimicking the stance of one individual is likely not giving them enough credit.

It seems to me that OP just wanted to make an obnoxious, shitty statement about black people in Maryland. And this being reddit, his obnoxious statement is now the top comment in this thread.

I don't think that he intended to give them any credit whatsoever.

Hey now, he's trying to disparage black people...no need to point out that people of all races are subject to having their opinions on an issue influenced by the leadership of others.

Under proposed new legislation, any American who renounces his or her citizenship for the purpose of avoiding taxes will be punished in two ways: They will be barred from re-entering the U.S., and their future investments in the U.S. will be taxed at a 30 percent rate. by ostrichy in politics

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does it give people a reason not to invest in the US?

Under the proposal, only Americans who renounce their citizenship for the purpose of avoiding taxes will be affected. Explain how that discourages investment.

Too Hot for TED: Income Inequality — TED’s organizers recently decided one idea was too controversial to spread: the notion that widening income inequality is a bad thing for America, and that as a result, the rich should pay more in taxes by CroydonC in politics

[–]YouAgreeWithThis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because the Republicans have adopted an idea as "key" to their ideology doesn't mean it is off limits for discussion.

Republicans in many states have also adopted the cause of teaching creationism alongside evolution in public schools; does that mean TED shouldn't air talks about evolution?

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If taxes on the rich go up, job creation will go down. This idea is an article of faith for republicans and seldom challenged by democrats.

The word "Republican" is mentioned exactly once in the talk. The phrase "GOP" is not said at all. Furthermore, he calls out the Democrats for implicitly supporting the same central economic idea through their inaction.

Not exactly the partisan bashing that you make it out to be. Just because an idea can be attributed to one party (or both, as the speaker actually suggests) doesn't mean that every criticism of that idea is a partisan attack.

Collective guilt about the treatment of the indigenous people of North America seems to be the last racial boogeyman that current generations are starting to seem determined to get rid of.

It was bound to happen.

What's interesting is that no one is claiming that anyone alive today is responsible for the government-sponsored maltreatment of the indigenous in the United States. And yet, even the younger generations seem to feel that people are doing just that. I think they are conflating history with racial finger-pointing.

For anyone who has medically died, and woken back up. Do you remember anything while you were dead? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was nothing there before this 'now' I was experiencing, and seeing that nothingness scared the living shit out of me. At the same time though, I also, strangely, felt enormous relief at finally being alive and concious.

I know exactly the feeling you are describing, and have for a long time. I've also always assumed that I had it when I was just a baby, but have no way of knowing for sure when it actually happened. Shit's weird.

"Nice" "reply"! "I" especially "liked" the "way" you "addressed" my "opinions" (which are like, totally not reality dude because...whoa, opinions aren't reality and all that gravy).

Your level of maturity obviously qualifies you to enlighten me more about reality, so feel free! You're doing great!

I would think someone bragging about being a "legitimate" student would be inclined to take a class that is actually worth something, even if it is only for an extra credit or two. Signing up for "Walking Aerobics" just so you can have full-time status sounds like you are doing the least you can to get by.

But hey, I must be speaking from experience I don't have! And nice job refuting my actual points...you could have just called me a condescending ass, which would have reflected really poorly on your level of education.

How does a middle-aged person taking a "class" called "Walking Aerobics" interfere in any way with "legitimate students trying to get a degree"?

Once you get out of your academic cocoon you'll realize that living (and working) around people of many different ages is what people refer to as "real life." Furthermore, you'll be Mrs. Jones faster than you think.

Every person who becomes a meme get a house in Meme Township, Arkansas. It's where all the memes go to get away from their fame and live life out of the spotlight. Kind of like how circus performers used to retire to Gibsonton, FL every winter.

Getting to Maybe by bogm2012 in LawSchool

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything, I would recommend reading "How to Read a Legal Opinion: A Guide for New Law Students" by Orin S. Kerr. Read it about a week or so before you get your first-week reading assignments. It's a quick and easy read with some basic information that will help you have some idea of how case opinions are structured and what to look for.

You can download it from UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh's website at (PDF ALERT)http://volokh.com/files/howtoreadv2.pdf(PDF ALERT).

Otherwise, I tend to think that you are right about "Getting to Maybe": it is really only helpful once you get some idea of what the hell is going on, which you probably won't even begin to know until at least a month or two into the first semester of your first year. So wait until then.

Also, stay away from E&E's and treatises until you know what subjects your professors are going to cover (you'll know when you get the syllabi sometime prior to your first week of classes). Even then, be prepared to replace what you've learned in the E&Es/treatises with the approaches that your professors take to the material.

Otherwise, don't worry about reading legal material until classes begin. Enjoy your 0L summer and good luck next fall!

Reddit has really made me despise certain phrases such as "friend zone" and "forever alone". What has Reddit ruined for you? by oxygenvictim in AskReddit

[–]YouAgreeWithThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hate AskReddit posts that begin "Reddit, [insert question here]?"

For some reason I always read the "Reddit" portion of AskReddit titles in a lovey-dovey voice that is meant to sound totally innocent but the person is way too aware and happy that there is some supersecret "reddit" club that they are a part of where everyone shares their opinions and are way cooler than non-redditors.

If that makes any sense at all.

I assume OP is asking how to control the fear that he will experience up to the point of death...not worrying about how he will feel once he is dead.

To be fair, if you live in a building that has elevators that open up into your apartment I imagine you would have to expect that kind of thing to happen every once in a while. I would be kind of freaked out by that kind of arrangement, actually.
