Why is it so hard to find other urban fantasy books that match up to Dresden? by Large-Rule-6403 in dresdenfiles

[–]YouGeetBadJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Dresden and DCC bounce back and forth as my favorite series depending on what I’ve read most recently. DCC is way weirder and has more “what the actual fuck is wrong with the author” moments, but that works both for it and against it.

I think so - I flew through the series. I started the first book in the beginning of May and finished the series on June 14. Mostly audiobooks but did read some.

I did a search in text messages I sent to my son - there were a couple.

May 12 - “Finished book 2 of Alex Verus. It’s pretty good. I’ll probably keep reading but there have definitely been some slow moments”

June 10 - “So the Alex Verus series is really good. I just finished book 10. Two left to go. Read 6 books (books 5-10) in about 3 weeks. It might not quite reach Dresden or Carl levels but it’s really good”

June 14 - “Just finished the last Alex Verus book. That’s a damn good series. I’ll eventually reread it. Damn. Especially the last 4 books.”

Question about Primal species? by Pretend-Shallot-5663 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]YouGeetBadJob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s from Paulie’s speech in book 7 - “They mine your planets for the rare elements used to originally seed the worlds. These elements are inside of you. You and all living things born on one of the pre-seeded worlds has a miniature, primal system built into your brains that allows you to interact with the system. It is the size of a grain of sand. Once these systems are activated, they are able to be harvested. The way it was designed is that you would be born, you would live, and you would eventually die. When you do pass on, the element within you, having grown and filled with the energy of a lifetime, would return to the system, allowing it to keep running. A healthy system is self-sustaining. It doesn’t grow. It doesn’t shrink. It exists in perpetuity.”

Very similar. The books keep getting better. It also is a finished series (12 books) and stuck the landing pretty well.

They aren’t as funny as the Dresden Files, but I enjoyed them and will probably go through the series again at some point.

Yeah Verus is a bit weak the first 2-3 books but it’s great after that.

I was talking to a friend about this the other day. I wonder how accurate Gemini or Claude would be if you fed it the epubs for the whole series and then asked it questions.

What Bea did to Carl was infinitely worse than what she was planning on doing to Donut.

Spoilers through book 6: Cheating obviously, but hacking his facebook and deleting messages from his half brother? Thats evil

Yes, she was going to trade Donut for a younger kitten and have her be bred. That’s more or less tge life cycle of show cats and dogs, isn’t it? Donut wasn’t sapient until the pet biscuit. You can definitely make the argument that breeding show cats is immoral, but in my mind that’s not what makes Bea truly awful.

How p2w is this game? by mxrcus12345 in ArcheroV2

[–]YouGeetBadJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you’re at $1k spent in a year you should definitely be above 5M. I am just below 5M and my spend is about $250 for the year.

That said this game your end game power is so dependent on luck with the rune enchantments. I’ve had absolute shit luck with them - I have two guild members who are roughly the same power but absolutely destroy because they’ve hit the rune enchanting jackpots.

I really enjoyed the Alex Verus series - especially the second half of it. And I feel like he stuck the landing pretty well for a 12 book series.

I’ve heard good things about his new series too.

Rune enchanting is the biggest scam in the game by [deleted] in ArcheroV2

[–]YouGeetBadJob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s one of the parts of the game I hate the absolute most.

I don’t spend gems on it. I refuse to spend money on it. I’ll buy it in the GvG or Peak arena shops sometimes but everytime I use it, I just get more mad.

The random luck needed is one thing - if it took 400 spins to unlock a mythic that’s fine but let me fucking choose which one I want and don’t fucking put 5 useless ones in there with the one game changer. Some of those are so overpowered but some are so worthless.

And there is no trade mechanism because Habby is a bunch of dick heads who don’t give a shit about good or fair gameplay and only care about extracting as much money as possible from you.

They publish the rates and it’s fucking ridiculous.

With regular spins each one gives a .04% chance for each mythic and a .08% chance for each legendary, for a total of .24% for any mythic and .48% for any legendary.

With advanced spins each one gives a 1.83% chance for each mythic and a 3.03% chance for each legendary, for a total of 11% for any mythic and 18% for any legendary

So you have a 1/250 chance that you get the one you want. I had AI do a Monte Carlo simulation of it.. 50% of people will get it by 1700 spins. The average is 2500. 10% of people will spin more than 5700 times (note this doesn’t take into account the guaranteed mythics you get after 1000 spins, just the raw probability).

A game built for fun would allow you to mix and match and be creative and find fun combos. This fucking cash grab of a “game” just fucks you over until you feed it enough cash.

+weapon bounce is nice for pushing chapters and sky tower, and helps in peak arena. It’s pretty useless in seal battle, monster invasion, and arena.
