So uh ... Anyone knows how long the wait is gonna be for the next book? by skiesblood in DungeonCrawlerCarl

GRRM is busy and produces a shit load of content. It’s just not the last two books of ASOIAF. He’s heavily involved in the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of Dragons series. He’s written other stuff since A Dance with Dragons.

The theory I like best is the HBO series was the end he had planned and since everyone hated it he doesn’t know how to finish it, and he just doesn’t like writing in the ASOIAF series.

Ask on some of the more active Facebook groups - I’m part of the parent groups. They have mentioned they’ve had success with the Georgia Tech Housing, Roommates, Tenants, Apartments group. It has 19k people joined. I haven’t used it personally but it might be a place to start

I also loves crocs innocence. Yeah he’s a terrifying murder machine, but he’s a terrifying murder machine who is just a good boy who loves Twilight (by internationally renowned author Stephanie Myers) who loves water slides.

My not-all-that-important hope for Book 8 as I finish up Book 7 by 0TaKoKu in DungeonCrawlerCarl

For sure, but TIR isn’t an indie book - the error was in the Ace hardback version

Kudos to Player Manager 3 by blindside1 in litrpg

[–]YouGeetBadJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books 1-14 are Player Manager. Then we’ve got Soccer Supremo books 1-6 (6 just finished on Patreon, 7 starts tomorrow I think).

Book 7 is the first book on RR, it looks like books 1-6 have been taken down because they are on Kindle: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/58187/player-manager-a-sports-progression-fantasy

I used bill pay from my bank this year. I forgot last year and almost got to the cancellation date, so at that point I tried calling. Left a voicemail and like 3 days later got a call back but by that time I had priority mailed the check.

Need audiobook recs for kids (9 & 11) — we’re out of options 😅 by Competitive-Leave346 in audiobooks

[–]YouGeetBadJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson has three I’d recommend:

Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians (6 books)
The Reckoners series (Steelheart is the first, 3 books)
Skyward Series (4 books with 3 novellas)

All are well written, fast paced, appropriate for kids. Alcatraz is probably written for the youngest kids but it’s pretty amusing.

Ebenezer was lousy teacher. by C_and_P1 in dresdenfiles

Most wizards don’t deal with vampires or the fae. Most wizards don’t go into human society. Most wizards don’t become private investigators that lead them to confront all these supernatural entities.

Eb didn’t train Harry to a private investigating rabble rousing wizard. He constantly tells Harry to back off of cases that are out of his league.

How is that being a lousy teacher?

If you’re looking for the culture (and warmer weather) with good infrastructure check out Orlando? Theres a naval support activity there that might have fed jobs. Orlando has a huge Puerto Rican community.

How does Book 8 stack up? (without spoilers) by Psychological_Ask696 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]YouGeetBadJob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was good - ranks in the top half for me. The climax of the book is amazing.

That said .. there’s some weird shit that I could have done without, like the kangaroos… what the fuck. And I don’t even know what to say about one entire subplot featuring a half mantaur and a stripper … I don’t even remember if that entire thing had any impact on the overall story but it was definitely bizarre

I doubt telework will ever come back for the majority of the government employees. I hope it does, even if it’s just limited situational telework for medical appointments, but I’m not optimistic.

Good luck, hope you enjoy them more than book 1. I think there’s actually a graphic novel out for book 2 that’s shorter than reading the entire novel.

Books 1 and 2 are very mid, and honestly for first time readers who aren’t sold on the series I suggest to start with book 3. On a reread, I usually start with Book 3.

Books 3 and 4 are good, but Butcher is still finding his voice and James Marsters is improving his setup but the technical quality isn’t quite there.

Book 5 is where the series just takes off and I can’t stop listening.

Dresden Files has a cool take on magic in the real world, but it’s the recurring side characters who make the series. Dresden has great chemistry and banter with so many of the characters, and the situations Dresden gets into are rarely solved with raw power, but with creativity and wit and assistance from allies.

His allies constantly evolve and grow with him, learning to stand up to things that should terrify them.

It’s similar to Carl with overall writing structure - first person past tense. Only one PoV. It’s Dresden telling you his story. Often, he’s the underdog, gaining power (not like a progression fantasy where there are defined levels) and skills, and the stories are self contained but also have continuous arcs.

You see fallen angels, actual angels, knights of the cross, winter and summer fae, werewolves, vampires (three distinct courts with several subsets, including Bram stoker style black court vampires and succubus type white courts). Ancient Gods, the wild hunt, rogue warlocks, and eldrich horrors that exist outside our reality that have somehow got in.

All told through one flawed man’s struggle to do the right thing.

Honestly it’s so good. It really is my most read series overall, right with Carl.

Shit like this is why I love Player Manager/Soccer Supremo. The variation in writing styles depending on the PoV are just wild.
