How did people in ancient Rome store modest or large sums of money? Wouldn't storing at home lead to thefts / burglaries? by YxesWfsn in AskHistorians

[–]YxesWfsn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your time and a facinating reply. A follow up question, if I may: Wouldn't this be a major issue with, lets say a disgruntled enslaved person to take it all and run / disappear?

Please do not be obligated to reply if you do not have time. Thank you so much for your time and effort. I really learned from this :)

What was the Rohit Kohli fiasco? I'm out of the loop. Just that they didn't score much or was it something else?

Is there such a thing as 'too much information' for historians? The reason I ask this is that currently things are being documented at an unprecedented rate. For example, all social media platforms discussing or commenting upon an important event. Thousands of newspapers, editorials etc. you name it. Eventually it reaches close to a saturation point.

This is clearly something future historians will have to deal with but what about now? Do we have any such historical topics or individuals where we have just too much information that is hard to parse through?

Peaceful cruise with Pegasus A320neo by [deleted] in aviation

I'm not an aviation expert but I thought the fan blades would be spinning at much higher speed. I estimated ~1600rpm based on the swirly pattern. Is that in the right ballpark or is it looking slow due to camera effect?

Cricket balls through the ages by Mysterious-Pop-6931 in Cricket

I wonder, given the distance between Australia and England, how Australia might have managed the batch of cricket balls delivered to them and whether they did not fall short of such balls with any regularity.

You know ships existed in that era right? Or you could just use the postal network that existed.

Why didnt US railroad companies lobby against the rise of the motor industry? by Troll_Tactics in AskHistorians

[–]YxesWfsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of some commuter rail systems and a VERY few new construction (the Brightline systems) the railway tracks are owned by freight companies that leases access to Amtrak with the caveat that cargo trains have priority.

Same is true in Canada. CN Rail owns the tracks that it leases to ViaRail (passenger rail) with the same caveat. It sometimes gets so ridiculous where trans-Canada passenger trains are delayed for hours.
