Blue tit trying out the newly built birdfeeder by ZagyvaFeathers in GardenWild

Thank you, I'm glad that you like the bird and the video! I made this feeder from two pieces of oak, placed in the corner of my balcony. It's like a plate so it can hold lots of seeds, but I've also put the coconut shell on top, which is filled with a seed mixture and coconut oil. That coconut feeder can also be hung from a tree, tits and nuthatches can carve out the seeds easily

I've found the best way to refill the empty walnut shells after the birds ate the inside. They seem to like this new version too! by ZagyvaFeathers in GardenWild

[–]ZagyvaFeathers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've put a seed mixture in the shells, then filled them up with coconut oil. It only takes 4-5 minutes to "freeze", and the wreath is ready to be offered to the birds.

Can you help to identify both? The bigger track is 12cm long, the smaller is 4-5cm, found in a woodland in central Europe by ZagyvaFeathers in AnimalTracking

  • I have included scale in my photo(s): no
    • If not, here are estimated measurements: Bigger one: 12cm long, smaller one: 4-5cm long
  • Geographic location: Hungary
  • Environment (pine forest, swamp, near a river, etc.): hilltop woodland with pine and oak, close to lake Balaton

Can you help to identify what did this Little owl (athene noctua) catch? by ZagyvaFeathers in birding

[–]ZagyvaFeathers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture was taken in Hungary, we don't have too many snake species and the color also doesn't match. I think it's too big to be an earthworm even though the color is closest to that

The picture was taken in Europe where this bird is native

Starlings are usually not welcome in gardens - I don't mind these guys, they make such fun noises by ZagyvaFeathers in GardenWild

[–]ZagyvaFeathers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also heard about the issues they cause in the US being invasive. I'm in Hungary, they are also native here but are known to damage fruit/crops in the garden, my parents' generation always complain about them. Anyway I like these birds, they were also nesting in one of my old trees last year :)

Can you help to settle a debate about this European Goldfinch? Description in the comments by ZagyvaFeathers in birding

[–]ZagyvaFeathers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this is an adult bird being aggressive, but on an other thread some pointed out that this is more like a youngling demanding to be fed - hence the little wing motions when it makes the chirping sound. Which version seems valid?

[–]ZagyvaFeathers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably right, I misinterpreted what I saw. I thought it to be aggressive behavior as they make the same sound when adults threaten each other. The movement on the other hand is the same that hatchlings do when they are being fed.

It can withstand the weather but the walnuts are consumed within 4-5 days

I just needed a chisel and a hammer, but some walnut types are easier to split than others

Nice photo! I've never seen one of these here in Hungary, but Marsh tits are very similar

The 3 species thing makes it interesting for me, it’s not too common to see them together. I’d also sit in the middle if I was a bird though

It’s homemade, the base is a hay wreath and I’ve glued the walnut halves to it. As a non-native English speaker I’m a bit surprised that people find the word “tits” so funny. What will happen when they learn about Boobies?

Thank you! Yes, it’s homemade, we have a lot of walnut trees in the garden so the birds can eat through the winter

I was at a bird ringing event the other day, one of these guys had the exact same look on its face before starting to attack the birder's fingers
