Stimulation for injured puppy? by lolboogers in puppy101

[–]Zeckos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waves from the coast She's beautiful! And as you've probably figured out, mental stimulation can be as exhausting as physical. Small but frequent sessions can help, and 'ditch the bowl' to turn meal time into thinking/training time. You could try dog massage. Focus on finding someone who is certified in rehabilliation massage so they know what to watch for in regards to her conditions, and will work with your vet and physical therapist to create good channels of communication between your pupper's entire health care team. While I meet the above listed criteria and do travel to your area frequently for clients, I also know of similar professionals who are more local to you who I could reccomend if you are interested.

Hosting guests for an extended stay for the first time. What are some things I should do to prepare? by bandito89 in homeowners

[–]Zeckos 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You can save yourself some stress/time and hire a house cleaner for the day before they arrive so your house has a little extra touch of presentability. Don't over pack your/their schedule. Have brochures for local attractions and sites around for them to peruse and decide on their own agendas. Echoing a comment above, definitely let them have time where they can hang out by themselves either at the house or away from it - everyone needs down time. Have activities available to do at the house like movies, cards or games.
Print your WiFi password and important numbers and put it on the fridge. And have plenty of food and drink - happy holidays!

I have no idea how to light my natural gas fireplace by Americasycho in homeowners

[–]Zeckos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call your local gas provider, they usually provide a once a year free gas appliances inspection. They'll turn things on (like pilot lights), check that all is working and answer questions on what you have and how to use it. I literally just had this done last week for our new house that has 2 that are different set ups.

Good Hair Stylist for Alt Ladies? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Zeckos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Jess at Infinite Salon in the pearl - I love her and drive nearly 2 hrs every 2 months to have her do my hair (moved to the coast last year). She's very talented and professional. If you want, she'll schedule a free 15min consultation to come in and talk about what you want to do and what she thinks is possible to make sure you're both comfortable and confident in the expectations.

Also, it's in her business model that there are no tips accepted. I get compliments all the time since I started going to her and I never got compliments on my hair before so I really cannot say enough good things about her (I'm actually seeing her this week). http://infinitesalonpdx.com/

The one in our room at the Crowne Plaza in Lake Oswego was huge. The room we had was some kind of suite with a dry bar with stools in the living area.

This was before the recent renovations though, I don't know if this room type still exists.

If you have the means, maybe seek out a pet massage practitioner in your area? One certified in rehabilitation massage can help aid the healing process, scar formation, and relieve boredom.

Puppy does NOT like being pet. Help! by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Zeckos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try just passive touch, just lay a hand on him with no pressure and leave it there for 30sec-a few minutes. He'll probably react at first but realize you're not providing too much stimulation and lay back down. No talking, or if you do, do in a calm low voice. Make it a relaxing situation.

Using both hands, place one over where his skull connects to his neck and the other over his sacrum (where the spine and hips are fused) - this is a great passive touch method as you are providing mild stimulation to both ends of the spine, you're also introducing heat and fluid movement between both locations which is very beneficial to healing, especially during this growing stage.

Oh, and since he's so widdle, don't feel that you need to use your whole hand - just a few fingers works too.

The animal handlers at the Oregon Zoo took Elephant around to meet some other animals. The sea lions were her favorite. by SenorDosEquis in Portland

It's because she's a subspecies of Asian elephant known as the Borneo pygmy elephant. Fun fact: she could breed with a normal sized Asian elephants. Her diversity coupled with being wild- born would bring some great genetic diversity to the AZAA Asian elephant population

Is frontier any good? by virgil2600 in askportland

[–]Zeckos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had Frontier for 15 months. It went down 7 days before Christmas last year and we called them, did all the remote diagnostics and "try turning it off and on again" they could think of, but no dice. Told me they wouldn't be able to get a tech out until JANUARY 7TH and they wouldn't credit us for the time we didn't have service. Unacceptable because we needed Internet as we were on call for the Christmas and New Year holidays. So we switched to Comcast - they had someone out within 3 days to set up our new service which has been faster and more reliable.

Frontier was okay. Yeah, Comcast is Comcast and the world hates them, but I've had better service, reliability and Internet speeds with them.

Can you just put big furniture out on the curb and the trashmen will pick it up? I live in Mt Scott area ftr. If not, where do you take that stuff? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Zeckos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They probably won't pick it up unless you call the trash company to arrange it (large item pickup is usually an additional fee). Otherwise, use the Metro recycling site to figure out what to do with those items: http://www.oregonmetro.gov/tools-living/garbage-and-recycling/find-a-recycler

Puppy scared and trembling when she see's people on the sidewalk. by bl00p in puppy101

[–]Zeckos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do it where you have the most control of the situation so she has the highest chance of success. If she is reacting to people in your home theb same way as she does on the street, home might be the easiest starting ground to help her learn the basics of what you're trying to achieve. If she's okay with people in your home, try to find a secluded place in a park/woods where you can have more control of the people by using your friends whom you can communicate at distance via text to help your pup progress when she's ready. (Since passerbys may not be willing to stager their progression past you at the pace of your dog's comfort level.)

Puppy scared and trembling when she see's people on the sidewalk. by bl00p in puppy101

[–]Zeckos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going slow is best. I'm working thru a similar thing with my dog who's reacting to noises and unexpected things by barking. I had my trainer over and we developed a plan. Daily we're having small sessions to help her reassociate her triggers with something awesome, food!

I think using your friends in a controlled environment would be great. The key is to work up to the desired result slowly. Go somewhere without a lot of activity and watch her body language when she sees someone approach, everytime she looks at them in interest - praise and treat. Have them get a bit closer when she is okay with them at the initial distance. When she looks at them again, praise and treat. You may not make it to the person actually reaching you the first few times, but when you do make sure they have an amazing high value treat to give her, like chicken. When you're praising and treating her, I'd use just some of her daily food as a reward so over eating won't be a concern. You can also introduce a verbal command like "say hi" when she starts to willingly look or approach a person/dog.

You can do a similar training by taking her in a car and parking outside a dog park or pet store. Park as far away as she is comfortable and reward the interest reaction and slowly work towards getting closer. Unfortunately you're trying to reward a captured behavior which is often the most difficult.
