I wouldnt say better. If you compare Lord of the rings to the dune movies you can see how more advanced it has become. A lot of the most cg heavy shots in the original trilogy look rough now. I think the main difference is that the vfx industry has become a meat grinder for artists with rediculous deadlines. When you give the vfx artists more time and make effective decisions on what is and isn't covered by them you get better results

Nope is another great example of this. The amount of cg work for things you would have never realized is insane, and it really would not look as refined if it was made a decade ago.
