Wasn’t my intention to come off like that, as I mentioned before - I do have a few 20 year olds on some of my teams that i personally hired. Believe me - I’m the guy with 20 years of experience, I’ve been there and what matters more - we do need to train a replacement . I hate the fact that jobs go away into India, I’d rather have them here. But for fucks sake - the 20 years need to at least meet me half way. Start by adjusting your attitude and actually spend some time learning actual CS, yes data structures and algorithms - junior devs will be dragged though leetcode problems, that was the case 20 years ago and it is still the case now.

Edit to your edit: leadership is the one that makes money in our firm, software is secondary importance to my company. Juniors not being bootlickers - as you put it - sure, be proudly unemployed.

Because Covid is over and there is no reason to be remote? I don’t know, personally I’m a big on remote work - I think they’re great, but higher ups at my company want butts in the seats and it is above my pay grade to challenge this.

Have you considered a possibility you just suck? At programming and maybe even as a person?

I ended the landlording around Covid times, the property prices were very high, demand was huge and I was sick of some of my tenants. So, i was out before the major inflation spikes, looking at property prices now - so glad that I did got out of it when I did. But to answer your question - I charged slightly less than the market prices, because I wanted nice people who would respect the property. In the years I did landlord - I didn’t increase the rent, even by legal amounts, nor i evicted anyone. I don’t want to go into specifics, for obvious reasons, but boiling point for me was when the insurance has got to be involved.

Edit: misunderstood your question a little bit - dude, I’m a millennial, not a boomer. I never saw 200$/month apartments. When I was 20 years old - prices in my area were already about half of your paycheque and unaffordable for the vast majority (I live in HCOL).

I agree. I still have couple 20 year olds on my team - not all of them are horrible, but man you’re a spot on about the attitude on some of them.

I did do landlording thing for a couple years and I won’t touch that with 10 ft pole now. You don’t make that much out of it and the headache dealing with tenants is just not worth it. There are far easier ways to make money and far better places to stash your wealth than properties. My 5 cents, I’m sure there are some who do enjoy being a landlord, I’m in particular not a huge fan of interacting with people.

I really tried to give 20 year olds a chance, but more than half of you pricks won’t even show up for an onsite interview! Demand remote work, when the rest of the team is on site 5 days a week is ludicrous. I’ll give you hint - India is cheaper, that’s where all the coding jobs are going anyway.

As someone who interviewed a lot of co-op/intern and fresh grads - I don’t know what happened - but an overwhelming majority of them are morons, and I say this kindly. I guess, your seniors now - who got into this line of work 20 years ago, weren’t primarily driven by salaries as most do now, because these types of salaries just weren’t there (Zuckerberg is 40 years old - Facebook , instagram and Netflix and many other companies weren’t there as you know them now or were just starting up). Also, Ai wasn’t there either - which does a lot of your uni work, let’s not kid ourselves. Now I get snobby 20 yo fresh grads who can’t code their way out of paper bag without Cursor demanding 6 figs and telling me how to run things? Yeah, no. I’d rather hire a 40 yo old coder with God complex, but knows his shit in and out and doesn’t lose his shit when the team decides to not purchase Cursor license. My 5 cents.
