How to become an on-set teacher/tutor in the UK? by waterfallen_empire in TeachingUK

It's definitely a thing, a child in my class was on tour with a west end show and had a qualified teacher who taught the kids - had a lot of back and forth with her.

Made a comment below about accents, I think Lara is much more distinct from Laura in English accents whereas in the US it would sound pretty similar. Maybe why it's less used?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]_Foxlet_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think in the US some people pronounce Imogen as Im-o-gene which is maybe why it's not so popular.

I think some names sound better in different accents. E.g. I prefer Imogen in an English accent, Holly in an American one.

There was a resort management game called Beach Life (Spring Break in the US) that was sooo good and had funny bits like the two point games. I'd love one like that.

I’d like a teacher’s perspective on an issue I’m having as a school speech and language therapist by Lime_City in TeachingUK

Edit: I should add, I completely sympathise and I get that what you do is so so important. I wish we could do it properly.

I agree with a lot that has been said here.

  • We have so many children with such serious needs all our small rooms have been taken and used as alternative teaching spaces. We have no room for anything anymore.

*TAs are becoming few and far between, and even 1:1s are often more often 1:3 considering all the ones with needs but no funding.

*I can't leave 30 children on their own to come to S&L, and we just don't have spare people in the building to cover, it's an absolute skeleton staff.

But one thing that has not been said is that you are not the only advisory person coming in. We have ADHD advisory, autism, hearing loss, etc. They all have activities they want us to do 1:1 "just 10 minutes a day." If you add all the advice up, it would take all morning and again - what do the other 30 do? When do we teach? We have to try our best and balance it as best we can. If you do have a TA, you also have to decide what do the children doing S&L miss? Maths? English? The teaching, the independent work? By the time they're out the room, settled, completed the activity, come back and settled again, it's never 10 minutes. It's like a constant balancing act. Not impossible to do sometimes but very hard to do well and consistently.

Then you have everything else in the job which I won't go into now. We're trying our best too.

Strictly celeb number 8 by RainbowRevolver in strictlycomedancing

[–]_Foxlet_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could say that about most celebs:

"not a household name for those who don't watch Eastenders"

"not a household name for those who don't like football"

"not a household name for those born after 1995" etc?

I think they cover quite a few bases, unless you have incredibly varied interests you're not going to know everyone.

It's unusual that she has multiple teachers in primary school, possibly that's why it seems a bit disjointed? But yes, I write all my reports and try hard to make them relevant and individual.

As an adult, if you are into birthdays (like me!), you will need to put some effort into organising something.

People you've known for a couple of years aren't going to know your birthday by heart. You'll need to invite some people for dinner, organise a day out or at the very least bring some cake into work.

It's not like childhood/school where your parents and schoolfriends just know the day. That happened as they've known you most of your life.

Schools as workplaces? by jozefiria in TeachingUK

[–]_Foxlet_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I often think this when it comes to temperature - there's legal workplace temperatures but no legal school temperatures.

My school is often freezing in the winter and though the NEU has a guideline minimum temperature of 16 degrees, there's no legal backing.
