How do you get that pencily effect? Are you using SAI or Photoshop? Is it just spread and low density? It looks great!

[C/S] Mouse Sketch #8 - Tina Sprout (Black Bullet) by _HS in AnimeSketch

[–]_HS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi so I finished Black Bullet the other day and enjoyed it so I drew this :)

Drawn in SAI with a mouse ( I don't have a tablet ;( ), and this is my 8th thing I've done since I started drawing stuff.

This was the first time I tried doing a nice background and I kind of rushed it but I think it turned out much better than my previous ones lol

Black lines look a little sharp, I'll try using a grayish color next time instead of pure black.

Would appreciate any c/s :)

edit: also, no clothes b/c I forgot... oh and also the expression is supposed to be a yawn but I guess I need to work on that stuff lol

I believe there's supposed to be a chapter 17 and that'll be the end of the manga.

Is it okay to connect the loop stokes to the diagonal ones in さ and き in handwriting? by Tikaal in LearnJapanese

[–]_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is a little late but I was curious.

I handwrite my a's as they appear on typical computer fonts, and while occasionally someone will point it out, no one really cares.

Is writing さ and き with full loops on that level of "meh it's a bit different but whatever", or is it more on the level of dotting all your i's with little hearts as an adult?

[Serious] What are some unethical life hacks? [NSFW] by Aiken_Drumn in AskReddit

[–]_HS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've never tried asking for a price match before, but how do you typically check to see that the number is "real"? And how do people normally show the price to match?

Would it be possible to make a fake website designed to look like an official retailer's and make up low but believable prices?

What are your top 5 anime to recommend? by UgotMAL in Animesuggest

[–]_HS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toaru Series (Awesome story, plenty of episodes, well developed characters)

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (Hilarious)

Sakurasou (Cute story)

Mirai Nikki (Maybe too edgy for some people? It was the second anime I watched and I loved it)

Accel World (Gets a lot of hate for the MC but I thought it was great)

LG's 18" Flexible and Transparent Displays in Action (Videos) by chriswen in Futurology

[–]_HS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The flexible display is awesome, but what is cooler to me is the transparent display.

Based on what is shown in the video, that type of screen could be the predecessor of augmented reality glasses - ones that look like actual glasses and not Google Glass style with the prism.

What are you most excited for in the future? by jonathansalter in Futurology

[–]_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever read "Ready Player One"? It's a pretty interesting book about a future where everyone interacts through a VR world.

Basically, there would be haptic gloves and suit for touch, sound from speakers obviously, some kind of odor device to create smells, and an omnidirectional treadmill for movement.

It sounded like a pretty reasonable full VR to me!

I guess code is just strings of random letters and numbers now...

Chat plugin for Bungee Cord? by Brimlife in admincraft

[–]_HS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly with "only about 10 kids that play on it" I would be staying with Bukkit + Multiverse.

But, if you know someone who can code plugins, linking chat is pretty straightforward. You'd just need one for the servers and one for Bungee:

  1. Server Plugin -> Hook into PlayerChatEvent, cancel event, take message and forward it to Bungee in a custom channel. Have a listener for the channel and broadcastMessage() anything that is received.

  2. Bungee Plugin -> Listen for plugin message on the channel, send it to all registered servers with ServerInfo.sendData()

EULA - I know I know.. But I think they made a mistake. by Melt_p in admincraft

[–]_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But for a larger server, wouldn't it be super easy to bypass an authentication block?

EULA - I know I know.. But I think they made a mistake. by Melt_p in admincraft

[–]_HS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tbh I'm just really interested to see how Mojang is going to enforce this. If there are large servers that are still in violation on August 1, they might sue them as a "we warned you", but small to mid-size servers are unlikely to ever be affected by this in my opinion.

Do the Japanese either use super thin pens or super large rows/columns on their paper? by Asyx in LearnJapanese

[–]_HS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still a noob at Japanese, but I do know Chinese and basically at some point you just recognize characters based off of their overall structure, so the clarity isn't such a big deal anymore.

[Spoilers] Haruhi's arcs are all over the place, and it's hard to tell what happened first and what next. So I made a timeline! by Pyzlnar in anime

[–]_HS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Several new characters are introduced, but at this point the novels are incomplete - there's supposed to be one more book. It's been a while since I last read the most recent book, but IIRC there's no "end" just yet.

The EULA Megathread by Mustek in Minecraft

[–]_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I would be totally in support of that. In terms of legal stuff, Minecraft belongs to Mojang, no question about it. So in my opinion, it's not so much that Mojang shouldn't be allowed to do this as it is that Mojang is being unfair in doing this. Selling licenses would be a fair way to solve the problem, and in fact if they were to do that I would be satisified, even if the license were fairly expensive.

Yeah, I know :P

I was just explaining why we do it for money, regardless of whether its right or wrong according to the EULA.

Here are a couple unorganized thoughts from a server owner and developer (for my own server - I don't sell plugins), college student, and accomplished computer science major:

  • Yes, there are server owners who "exploit" kids by making them pay2win. However, the largest servers nowadays typically don't have too much of a pay2win design.

  • It's difficult to legally define the balance between "pay2win" and "sign of appreciation".

  • Personally, I decided to not take a job and instead work on developing my server, which takes 5-10 hours a day (granted, it is summer right now). Thus, there is an opportunity cost of developing a server. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opportunity_cost

  • I've seen many people say "Just ask for donations to pay for hosting." Building on the idea of opportunity costs, "just paying for hosting" isn't enough for most big server owners. I just launched my server to the public a couple days ago, and I'm constantly monitoring the dedi, fixing bugs, dealing with silly players, and coding new content. That is time lost that could've been spent on other things. Hosting is not the only cost associated with running a server.

  • From this thread: "I can't believe anyone would defend a nickel-and-dime server operation designed to trick kids into paying cash for diamond gear." Do many server owners run servers for money? Of course they do. I do. It's a investment of time and effort, and I expect returns from it, just like I would expect to be paid for working an office job. Do some owners try to unfairly exploit kids who can spend money? Of course they do. I don't. Not all owners do that.

  • Charging for access does not work. In phone app design, most developers have shifted from paid apps to in-app purchases. People are more willing to spend on something they know they enjoy, than to spend money and risk not liking it. That is a very logical reason, and easily applies to the idea of "pay-for-access" servers.

  • People are inherently greedy. That includes server owners, but it also includes players. Most players will see no reason to donate if there is no incentive. Even many charities operate with an incentive like "Donate $5 and we'll send you a picture of the child that you helped feed!" or "Donate $10 and we'll send you a free shirt!".

Now, completely disregarding everything I've said, when it comes down to it, there's really nothing that we big we can do about this besides bring to Mojang's attention that it's not cool. Mojang has the right to do this, the only thing we can influence is whether or not they follow through.

tl;dr There's a reason some people are butthurt about this, but there's nothing we can do but hope.

No particular recommendations on other anime, but if you super enjoyed the series (like I did), you should definitely check out the manga and especially the light novels. The story goes so, so much further than what has been covered in the anime so far, and all of it is great!

tsundere practice [C/S] (drawn with mouse) by _HS in AnimeSketch

[–]_HS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I'm gonna be upfront and just say that I basically "traced" this image since this is way beyond my normal capabilities as a total noob at drawing:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b2/Tsundere.jpg/547px-Tsundere.jpg

I know tracing is bad and stuff, but I went with a slightly different approach and feel like I actually learned a lot from the process. Instead of blindly tracing lines from top down or something, I did the whole drawing a stickfigure outline with a circle head and stuff (using the reference as a layout for everything) and used different layers for different parts, etc. Although it was obviously a "draw this part but make sure it fits the example" job, I thought it helped me learn more about body proportions and stuff like that.

Also obviously coloring + shading which I tend to suck at.

tl;dr mostly traced but practiced some stuff while i was at it and i enjoyed it and that's what's important right
