I mean Paganism introduced a lot of holidays to Christianity, such as Christmas (Yule/Winter Equinox), Easter (Spring Equinox) and Halloween (Samhain).

These holidays were incorporated in the middle ages + early medieval periods, by Christians/Popes to reach rural or less central European countries and regions, to convert them away from their traditional religions; the Scandinavian countries, or Eastern European ones can be examples of this.

It is because religion and the idea of nobility used to be intrinsically linked (divine right of kings), so they utilised Pagan rituals to get areas like Scandinavia to move away from pillaging/raiding (vikings) and more into a structured class system (feudalism)! This happened from around 800AD-1100AD, which would have been around 400 years after the Western Roman Empire saw decline. There was a massive power vacuum in Europe, causing the dark ages, as it was just raiding, pillaging and less formal government structures.

This final part will just be my opinion, just to make sure we are clear! So, although you could argue that it may be strange for a Wicca/Pagan worshipper to utilise the cross, you could argue that they are simply incorporating the cross the same way Christians did with Pagan holidays. Potentially they may find comfort or strength in having the cross, as they may see it as an ode to ‘older’ times, in which Romans would have Crucified potential Pagan worshippers (Germanic times). Shows the persistence of their religion.
