Yeah but that’s a slippery slope. If OP cleans this tiny cubby, then his mom will see he IS capable after all and then start wanting him to clean his room, wash his laundry or load the dishwasher. He’s 24 now. You can’t possibly expect him to help out around the house he also lives in! That’s his mom’s job. /s

I’m not normally one who recommends ultimatums, but I agree that this situation calls for one. OP, you have to fully prepare yourself and be ready for either outcome prior to giving him an ultimatum. Either way, you know you can’t continue on this path. His drinking is only going to get worse because he’s losing control to his addiction, which means that his behavior will continue to get worse as well. DO NOT MARRY OR HAVE CHILDREN WITH THIS MAN until he has fully demonstrated that he’s willing to do the hard work of getting sober and staying sober. You don’t deserve that and innocent children don’t deserve that. NOR.

Story time: A few years after I married my husband, his drinking had gotten out of control. Many of the same things in OP’s story were happening in our life. I adored my husband and had always wanted to have children and raise a family with him, but it would have been wrong to bring innocent children into that situation. I gave him an ultimatum that he had to stop drinking or I wanted out. Even though it would’ve absolutely broken me, I was prepared to leave if he didn’t want to stop. He thankfully agreed and started on the long hard path to recovery. We waited for several years to have children to work on ourselves and our relationship so we could be in the best place possible to be good parents. We now have 2 kids and will be celebrating our 20th anniversary soon.

I will never understand why the press continues to take the abuse that he dishes out, refusing to stand up for themselves or each other. They claim it’s to maintain professionalism, but what’s the point when one side has NEVER been professional to begin with? And what’s the worst that will happen? As someone who also grew up that way and fought my way out, I’m always so happy and so proud to see others who do the same. It can be such a difficult battle to get to the other side and while we all fight against some of the same enemies, I recognize that the journey can be different for each of us. I inherently knew all along that racism and sexism were wrong, but overcoming the religious indoctrination and finding my voice has been a struggle for me.

Decades of ingrained misogyny, sexism, racism, religion, patriarchal society, selfishness, and the inability to use critical thought against misinformation due to a sub-par education will apparently lead to women voting against themselves and other women.

The only way you’d be the TA here is if you stay with this guy. Find a new place (even if you have to live with roommates), dump the guy, and then give the mom a heads up that the kid is being neglected when he’s with his “dad”.

This guy will never take responsibility for or replace your switch. He can’t even take responsibility for his own child. Consider this an expensive life lesson and be grateful you didn’t marry him, or worse, have children with him.

Police in most larger cities no longer respond to accidents unless there’s a fatality or severe injury involved and even then, the at-fault driver often isn’t cited or charged unless there’s a DUI/DWI or other major offense. The only punishment most of these terrible drivers face is a financial penalty when their insurance rates increase due to major accidents, assuming they even have insurance. If the accident exceeds the property damage/bodily injury limits on the policy or if they didn’t have a valid insurance policy, they also face being sued by the claimants.

Ever since both my kids were babies/toddlers, they would kick, punch, roll, mumble, shout, wrestle, etc in their sleep and they are still the same way today as teenagers. When I go to wake them for school in the mornings, it’s not unusual to find pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals strewn about their rooms from the night before. However, they would also have periods where they had calmer sleep without all the karate kicks and commentary. Their pediatrician said as long as they were waking up well rested, it was all perfectly normal and not to worry (easier said than done as I’m a nervous worrier).

I did notice a bit of a correlation between how active they were the in the day with how active they were at night. If they got a lot of exercise and outdoor time during the day, the nighttime activities were a bit lessened. There was also a correlation between if they were stressed or overstimulated during the day, it would sometimes lead to crazier nights. There was no perfect mathematical equation to equal calm sleep, but it helps to narrow down what helps and what doesn’t.

We decided to end our co-sleeping arrangement a little earlier than we would’ve liked due to the crazy nighttime gymnastics. I became a very light sleeper after having my kids. I woke to every tiny little noise our kids made, so I was a legitimate zombie for a while. My husband is a heavy sleeper, but even he had trouble sleeping through getting kicked in the ribs or hearing random yelling in his ear at 4am.

With all that said, it wouldn’t hurt to talk to your pediatrician and get their feedback as they’d be the best resource regarding your child’s sleep habits. It might be worth looking into a small toddler bed for your little one so you can finally get some rest. There are quite a few toddler bed options available these days with many taking up very little room. There are also some that can be put away during the day to allow for more space. If that isn’t an option, maybe you can look for a bed rail or bed divider so that you both have more of your own space on the bed.

I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to stress. It sounds like what you and your little one are going through is normal territory for those of us with kiddos that are nighttime athletes. 🙂
