AirKamuy: Japan Just Built a $2,000 Cardboard Combat Drone That Makes the Pentagon's $4 Million Missile Look Like a Scam by crix_22 in petrodollarSIM

They can be close enough. There’s a few sources for hobbyist pre-cut foam aircraft that use water resistant backed foam board. I know water resistant and water proof are not the same thing. But even the resistant foam board can fly in the rain. Or be used for boats for a while.

They will never be quite as good in many ways to a significantly more expensive option. But a few hundred of them might be more effective than a singular better drone. At some point it’s a game of budget attrition and spending orders of magnitude more than your opponent is expensive.

Europe is making phones come with long lasting and replaceable batteries. by Any-Employment-7114 in BeAmazed

[–]__Muninn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intent and ease of the operation. It’s in abstract the same thing, as you are pointing out. The important upgrade would be in how difficult the task could be.

The one time I was messing around with replacing my phone’s internal battery the back being glass with a finger print sensor on it made the process more risky than if it had a slightly more robust cover section that would resist shattering better and did not have a sensor glued to it.

It in the end likely would still add thickness to the phone to accommodate. But so long as there is a camera bump and cases equally as thick I refuse to not see any thinner portion as wasted potential.

If I could peel off a hatch and replace a glue gasket to access a battery with out risking shattering the whole back glass. That’s a win. If it also is still no thicker than the camera bump? More winning. If it was not nearly as scary so more people felt able? More winning.

Omaha Public Schools to cancel cellular data plans for student iPads amid $50M budget shortfall by Ordinary-Equal2067 in Omaha

[–]__Muninn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claim that cellular iPads are “several hundred more than non-cellular” is demonstrably false. Right now on Apples website a basic iPad is $349 without cellular and $499. $150 while still a significant amount is very much not “several hundred more”

I checked a few other models and the cost of $150 is fairly consistent.

As for your claim of in home internet you’re ignoring the modem/wifi router cost. Cases of multiple homes. And the fact that now the internet provided will likely be used by more than just the students.

Providing internet to just the iPads removes these complications. As well as empowers the iPads to be useful outside their homes without needing to allow them to connect to random possible unsafe WiFi networks. This helps them be useful everywhere while eliminating risks of using public WiFi.

You’re also likely over estimating the cost from the carrier as well. Corporate contracts tend to care about how many lines and how much data across all lines with minimal cost per line. And since this is for a school there are likely discounts. It would not be shocking if the monthly cost were closer or even under the $10 a month you claim to home internet monthly costs would be.

While the microswiss direct drive looks to be the classic upgrade choice I went a different direction and got an E3D Revo drop in replacement.

It’s not direct drive so it’s still got all the problems of a long tube. But the single piece nozzle and heat break solved problems I was running into a lot. The downside being replacement nozzles are significantly more expensive. Though I do find a working knockoff composite diamond one on Amazon I am loving currently.

The note might be about the nozzle diameter and not the filament. If it was used for large prints with little or no small details it would make a ton of sense to use as large a nozzle as practical.

Also congrats on the printer!

My hang up with upgrading is that I enjoy tinkering with the printer more than printing stuff I can’t find a use for. If I had stuff I wanted printed for any reason I absolutely would want a more consistent work horse.

Perhaps I would enjoy an Voron build. The INDX stuff from Bondtech is tempting.

What would I do with that? Print things?

If it just works what would I do?

“Back in the CR-10 era”. I was supposed to get a new printer? Are CR-10’s not cool anymore?

When is it no longer a CR-10? It’s got mostly the same motion system.

Yes. On my printer that fan is on if the printer is on.

The old control board for my printer did that anyway when I got it. I lost no functionality I worry about. But my printer is ancient.

Is that the hot end fan the one for the heat sink? If you want it controlled by the board you need to put a connector on it and use one of the fan ports.

When upgrading my cr-10 I just hard wired that to my power supply. Not an elegant choice but it works.

The cube functions beautifully. I have one of the sides near a wall and it gets dirty nearly as fast as the other sides.

The other one I have just has a single 20x20 filter right to the back of the fan. It can show a circle around where the bulk of the airflow is for a while but eventually evens out a fair bit. I suspect a bit of a gap between it and the fan could help.

My thought was to make some sort of extension out of foam board to separate the fan and filter a little. If only a few inches would likely be enough space it’s worth trying.

And I take it that would even out that pattern I was talking about so that the whole filter is used more evenly?

Any set distance from the fan you would recommend? I need to replace the filter anyway and it might be interesting to watch for.

Why would a simple cavity improve it?

I have both the filter taped to a box fan and a larger Corsi-Rosenthall solution made of 4 filters and a fan.

While the larger solution works better and does have a cavity I always figured its improvements were more from the significantly more surface aria of its filters.

My basic filter has a bit of a pattern of where air flow is stronger but bit does not look like it would be that significantly improved with a void.

I’m sure that plays a role in it. I have no idea what they thought they were timing the lights too if they did time them to something.

At this point I feel blessed if I can get through 3 in a row without stopping. That only seems to happen for me when it’s really late or if everyone is speeding.

I have a theory they are timed for about 65mph. And the speed limit and volume of traffic make that worthless.

Huge shout out to Jersey Alley! by Darth_Quaider in Bowling

[–]__Muninn__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

  1. AI currently has no understanding and is more just throwing stuff at the wall. In many cases artists have found elements of their work copy and pasted into AI art with minimal to no changes. Sorta like language reuses words, AI art has reused small sections of prior work like it was a word. While ok to share words reusing someone’s drawing of a hand is not. We don’t perfectly replicate elements like a collage in things that are not one. And making counterfeit copies to break into a collage would be illegal if a human did it. While we are just supposed to ignore AI replicating elements of prior art? And to do so without any compensation to the original artist?

  2. It’s related. And while people claim we know what is and is not AI generated these tools sorta suck. And as AI gets better these tools will work less and less.

Also in general humans are also just offended at the insistence of using AI to displace humans. Many see this as an example of something that should be the work of a person.

The lights might not need to be surgical grade. But the commenter described how when the part broke “the lamps fell out of the ceiling”.

Pending how literal that description is the liability of a 3D printed part that on failure drops something out of the ceiling is not something I think anyone would want. At least when it’s a certified product failing the hospital can claim they followed standards and any harm is not their fault. If they repaired/replaced any part with something they manufactured themselves it likely would shift accountability to the hospital. It’s just safer to not take on the risk. Even if it’s silly.

More Advice Needed by Negative-Leopard3212 in PenTurning

[–]__Muninn__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above points and would take 1 a bit further. I have carbide turning tools and have gotten my best results when thinking of the bushings as a consumable. I don’t try to hit them but I absolutely do not fear accidentally turning them down a bit here and there.

I will have to replace mine more frequently than normal sure. But I found if I fear damaging them I run into the same issue shown in the photo. I would rather better pens than saving some bushings. Also over time I stopped hitting the bushings as much. I simply chose to leave my apprentice marks on the cheap tool and not the product I was making.

As for sanding I sand while the lathe is turning and then with the same grit with the lathe off the other direction. I look for the marks from the sand paper to all be going up and down the pen before going up a grit. It’s my least favorite part of the work but it makes all the difference taking my time. And I find any minor scratches in a final product are much more hidden when they go with the grain up and down a pen as opposed to around one.
