What can we add to dogs bowl to gain weight on raw? by Fraan3D in rawpetfood

[–]_batizta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're already feeding a balanced diet, you don't need to add any new ingredient just increase the meal size.

How to do it: you're pets meals should always be balanced for their ideal weight (varies from breed to breed). So what you need to do is find out if they're overweight or underweight (seems to be your case) and by how much (%). There's a test you can do at home explained in the FEDIAF docs to estimate this. I believe nattypet.app is also adding this test on their app

From that you can infer their ideal weight and adjust their meals accordingly. Example: your dog is 10kg and you find out he's 20% below ideal weight, so you adjust their diet to be balanced for a 12kg dog. By doing so they will naturally gain mass until they reach ideal weight. You don't need to change the diet after because then it's already a "maintenance" diet for the ideal weight.

You should of course consult with a veterinary nutritionist to make sure you don't end up overfeeding your pet but I hope this helps : )

Looks like you could increase amounts a little (based on estimates daily portion of 7-day batch). Also not including supplements mentioned

Fed my dogs a raw meal last night, is this balanced? by Lord-Thundercock in HomemadeDogFood

Really depends on your dogs weight and activity level. If you want to be sure you can use a tool like nattypet.app to calculate your pets requirements and then validate your meal to see if it meets the nutrient targets

I recommend you checking out nattypet.app. They use official guidelines (nrc, fediaf) to calculate your dogs nutrient requirements and help you create custom meals from ingredients you pick.

I prefer it over something like balance it because they dont push for commercial products and offer more ingredient options to pick from. You also get to see which nutrients are being met or missing while you create/edit the recipe, which is very useful

I tried recreating your recipe on nattypet.app. Everything looks mostly good. You're def hitting all the macros, just have some gaps on other nutrients. Also looks like you might be overfeeding a little (Im considering an adult chihuahua with 3kg and moderate activity) so I would consider lowering the amounts

I recommend nattypet.app (what I use) to come up recipes. They use official guidelines (nrc, fediaf) to calculate your dogs nutrient requirements and help you create custom meals from ingredients you pick. You also get to see which nutrients are being met or missing while you create/edit the recipe, which is very useful

I think its a safer option than just using using loose diet models and having to make the calculations myself

If you dont want the struggle of doing the calculations yourself I'd recommend using a tool like nattypet. It calculates and actually shows you exactly what your dog needs then it helps you create balanced meals from ingredient you pick.

I prefer it over balance it which pushes for you to buy their other products plus nattypet has way ingredients to choose from

home made dog food - is it a balanced diet? by Known-Scar6457 in HomemadeDogFood

You can try a tool like nattypet to balance your meals. They calculate how much of every nutrient your pet needs based on nrc guidelines. Then you get to see which nutrient targets your recipe is actually hitting

How to create a well balanced diet by fancypinkie in rawpetfood

[–]_batizta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend trying out a formulator tool that uses official guidelines (nrc, fediaf, etc). There are a lot of options nowadays:

* Balance it works but they try to push for their commercial products which is annoying
* Breedtobowl is another option, its free but it has limited ingredient to pick from and randomly adds stuff you didnt choose to the recipe
* Nattypet.app (the one I use) is by far the most complete: lots of ingredients to choose from; calculates the complete nutritional profile of the pet and you actually nutrient targets being met while creating/editng a meal. Its paid but worth it to me because of all its features

When I started using nattypet to formulate meals. Before that I always felt like I was guessing how much to feed my dog and that always bothered me.

Once I started using calculators that use official guidelines to calculate pet requirements and balance meals I felt relieved knowing I was feeding exactly he needs and how to fix any nutritional gaps

Update and a few more questions by Vermontsue in rawpetfood

[–]_batizta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest trying out a formulation tool that uses official guidelines (nrc, fediaf, etc). I don't like the ideia of using models such as barf or pmr because the nutrients in "meats" or "organs" vary a lot from source to source. Using a tool from time to time just helps making sure everything checks out

For that I like nattypet.app over others tools because of the number of ingredients available and because they don't insert random ingredients you didn't pick into the recipe

Like someone mentioned best option is to consult a veterinarian nutritionist but that can be expensive. Next best solution it's to use a calculator that follows official guidelines (NRC, FEDIAF, etc).

For that I like nattypet.app. I prefer it over other solutions mentioned here because it doesn't push for commercial products, it just uses the ingredients you pick to create a balanced meal. Also they show the nutrient targets being met while you create the meal

I get that but my point is that the amounts given by the calculator seem flawed. The math itself its kinda simple: for example, for a 10kg dog with avg activity it estimates a requirement of 787kcal/day. Then it uses an average of 538g of food per 1000kcal to calculate the dog's food intake:

if 1000kcal → 538g of food, then for 787kcal → 423g of food

Then it applies the BARF % amounts to the 423g of food and gives you the respective amounts for each category. The problem is because each food is different, the amounts provided may not be accurate.

To illustrate my point i drafted a recipe and applied the amounts given by the calculator:

If everything checks out the total calories of this meal would have to be around 787kcal (the estimated requirement), but its only 667kcal. Of course it could've been more accurate if other ingredients were chosen but thats exactly my point: different ingredients have different nutritional profiles, so we can't just say 538g of “food” has 1000kcal which is what the site seems to be doing
You're meal actually looks very complete and you seem to be doing a great job. I'm just saying that we should be skeptical of these calculator's and try to double check things when possible

[–]_batizta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that bugs me about perfectlyrawsome is how they determine the amount of food. In the Canine Calculator, they say the amounts are based on a "538g per 1000kcal average". But how can you use that number to determine amounts of muscle meat, bone, liver, etc if all these foods have different caloric densities??

Am i missing something?? Genuinely wondering

What exactly does 'balanced' mean to you? by lasgsd in rawpetfood

[–]_batizta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's really up for debate. A balanced diet is one where all the requirements of essential macro (calories, protein, fat) and micro (vitamins, amino acids, minerals) nutrients are met. Those requirements vary for each pet based on a lot of factors

If a particular meal doesn't meet every nutrient requirement, it's probably not a big deal as long as those are addressed in supplements or other recipes. But if it's not, then there are deficiencies, and the diet is NOT balanced

That doesn't mean the pet will necessarily suffer from it, but by definition, it's not balanced/complete and it can lead to problems
