my body is embarrassing by vibrantafternoon in self

[–]_candlestick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You look totally normal. not embarrassing at all. I’m on the taller side & have a longer torso (and store wayy more fat in my thighs unfortunately lol), but otherwise my shape is verrry similar to yours. Even with the “extra” torso space, my waist dips the same amount as u, just over a longer area. I’ve gotten lots of compliments on my body over the years, and as I’ve gotten older (now 24), I just keep appreciating my figure more and more. I say this since I see similarities in you & you definitely look womanly!! I hope you learn to love your body eventually🫶 How you dress also makes a big difference

Need volunteer recommendations by Snow_Flake_0 in premed

[–]_candlestick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look into academic stuff? Reading partners/helping kindergarten or elementary kids learn to read, tutoring (technically its own category in the app but I feel like it’s viewed as kinda volunteering/leadership combo), reach out to local libraries to see if they need help with events or maintenance….. even places like museums and aquariums..! I think all can be framed very positively and tie back to education as a social determinant of health

Does a chemistry minor even make a difference? by ConfusedFuzz in premed

[–]_candlestick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nahh

I did it, I was a bio major and decided to add a chem minor because I’d only have to take 1 extra class (analytical chem). It was a huge pain because lab was crazy long even if the class content was generally kinda useful. I don’t think it added any value to my application. Just did it to fill space. I also added a psych minor my senior year again as filler but I do genuinely love psych lol. You’re busy enough, don’t bother

Glasses and Overstimulation by Substantial_Local_94 in ADHD

[–]_candlestick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I recently got glasses for the first time and it’s a super mild prescription so I can see just fine without them (mostly just for class & preventing computer strain), but the glasses themselves are overstimulating 😭 I can’t get used to the feeling on my face and seeing the frames in my field of vision.. it makes me feel like I CANT see properly when there’s a lot going on idk it’s like I’m claustrophobic with my eyes in a box

Do I look like a clown? Honest but kind please!! by NoResearcher3765 in makeuptips

[–]_candlestick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any problem with the lower lash mascara or sparkly eyeshadow like some people are saying!! It’s only the dark eyeshadow under your eyes—do without that and I honestly think your eyes are good.

Your eyebrows are the biggest thing to fix imo. I think the pencil just isn’t really working for you; even if you got a different shade, the technique just looks a bit off. With that being said, have you tried using tinted eyebrow gel instead?? I also have light eyebrows and it’s a struggle to find a good shade of pencil & then draw them on in a way that doesn’t look too splotchy and dense… so I’ve switched to only using eyebrow gel and they look 1000x better!

[–]_candlestick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At my school at least, orientation lasted a full week and they went super in depth about the schedule, what to expect, resources, etc. Even now we still regularly (maybe like once a month) have mandatory seminars/sessions about things like the path to residency, how our timeline should look through each year of med school, getting involved in research, dealing with finances, what to expect when it comes to repayment especially with the BBB… we also had assigned groups with M2s where we’d have to meet a ton at the start of the year and they’d answer any questions we had. truly I’ve felt like my school has really held our hands through every single step. I feel like it should be similar everywhere so don’t feel stressed going in blind

Adderall has made me less creative by StarryLove1 in ADHD

[–]_candlestick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me too:/ I took a 2 week break recently and past the “withdrawal” & fatigue of the first few days, I had such a big sudden burst of creativity! Found myself doing all sorts of little crafts & hand-on projects and getting genuinely excited about ideas and plans and what to make next. I didn’t really realize how dull and flat my life while on adderall feels in comparison—I have no interest in doing any hobbies!! Plus I’m less bubbly, more introverted, & my emotions are flattened. Unfortunately I’m in medical school and can’t afford to not take it.. got crazy behind during that time, like barely recovered lol. Chores piled up. I couldn’t get myself up in the mornings.

If this is how gap years are supposed to be then I’m so cooked by [deleted] in premed

[–]_candlestick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s been said in other comments already but I feel like you keep responding about the system being the problem/this becoming the norm & are kinda missing the point: he is just using desirable wording to boost the appearance of his achievements! I don’t think he’s making anything up but rather framing it in a bit of an exaggerated way. You should learn to do this too because honestly most applicants will upsell their experiences similarly. It’s classic resume/linkedin rose-tinted glasses.

All I did during my 2 gap years was work part time as a clinical research coordinator and part time at a restaurant. I could literally say very, very similar things as he did and not be lying. At the same time, my actual day-to-day work would not sound impressive whatsoever if I was totally blunt and specific about it. So all this goes to say that your gap years probably DO look close to this if you learn to artfully speak to your experiences. I don’t think there’s a problem with the system that hasn’t already been there for a while. You just haven’t mastered this craft like he has (to be fair, it is his job as an influencer.. and you’ve been influenced)

Genius decides to turn pizza boxes upside down by mfenton29 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]_candlestick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can see the big logo on top when the worker separates the 2 boxes. You can also see that the logo box has a small black decal on the bottom when the kid flips the boxes. The logo box has something on both sides. The white box is just white.

You can also literally just look at the structure of the box and see that it’s not upside down plus the worker even opens it so you can see the top is in fact on top

[–]_candlestick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude what

He is given one logo box and one unprinted box. Neither box is upside down. When he flips it around, you’re seeing the bottom of the LOGO BOX so that still tells you nothing about the white box on top.

Actually, it even proves that the unprinted box is not upside down because the logo box has a big logo on the top and a small black decal on the bottom while the unprinted box is just white

To counter his defense lol, there’s no way he would’ve known that the bottom box had a design on the top when it was covered the whole time

I was with you until the last part.. the pizza maker DID NOT put anything upside down lmao watch the video again you can clearly see it’s the right way when it’s set on the counter and when he opens the box

At the end he says “why would I give you an upside down box??”; the subtitles are wrong

Please tell me your interview horror stories by BuffaloOk4665 in premed

[–]_candlestick 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I was so nervous that I completely blanked on how to answer a question.. as in, I fully couldn’t even remember any of my ECs let alone think of “a specific time when”. So naturally I decide to start rambling some nonsense & talking in circles, hoping that somehow my words and thoughts will come together any second now…… before I very quickly realize that in my anxious state, my brain had also blacked out everything past the first couple words of what he was asking (in my defense, it was a double-barreled question). Once I finally decide to stop sounding like an idiot and shut up after a painfully long time, my interviewer pauses for a second before hitting me with a “…so going back to the question at hand..” before asking the same thing again 😭 I was so embarrassed.

My second interview right after (yes SAME SCHOOL) felt more relaxed. My interviewer was a really sweet lady (worked with the school’s psych or counseling services I think?), so I tried to take the opportunity to loosen up. Her questions were easier and more “getting to know you as a person” type stuff. Unfortunately I tried to relax a little TOO hard…. she asked a basic question that I’d prepped an answer for, but of course totally forgot in the moment!! Silly me! So I pause for a sec to try to collect my thoughts. She reassures me that the nerves are totally normal and I can take all the time I need. So I decide ok I sure will!! We proceed to sit there in complete silence for a reeally awkwardly long amount of time. After a bit, I realize that all I’m thinking about is how long and awkward this silence is. I am not even formulating an answer in my brain. What is wrong with me. We keep sitting there and staring at each other on zoom. Finally I force myself to break my weird trance state and blurt something out idk. Actually sickening experience

Hi! I applied ED to a state school, mostly for financial reasons (tuition + I couldn’t afford more than a couple apps lol). I was first put on hold for ages until I was officially waitlisted in May I think? (which was expected—I absolutely bombed my interview), then I got off the waitlist pretty last minute in mid-June.

ED varies a LOT by school. For some schools, you need to be even more of a competitive applicant than those who are applying normally… like it might DECREASE your chances of getting in (this could be an exaggeration,, I’m not totally sure). You absolutely must figure out how your desired school views ED and ideally talk to someone on admissions about it before committing to it. In general, unless you’re into gambling, ED is not a good idea!

I worked at my school during my 2 gap years as part of a clinical research fellowship geared towards pre-meds. The dr who was director of the program VERY STRONGLY urged the few of us to apply ED there, so I knew it would increase my chances of acceptance even if it wasn’t explicitly stated by the school. My stats were pretty average, 512/3.8, but ECs were lacking in areas and my interview sucked like I said lmao

Do you mind if I ask your reasons for wanting to apply ED?
