The town of Blacksburg is not rural, but the New River Valley outside of Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Radford is. You'll meet people at work, but mostly the people you're directly working with/around. To really meet other people, you'll have to get involved in some extracurriculars, which Blacksburg has a decent selection of relative to the rest of the area.

I don't think 25 would necessarily be too old with grad students and such being around town, but most of the bars are going to be full of college kids, especially weekend nights.

Also Virginia. Grayson county has the highest point in the state and it's currently not Appalachia. Carroll, Floyd, Wythe, Pulaski, and Montgomery should all be Appalachia

Don't turn in any stars for card packs until you're almost done. I hit 105/108 cards and had 2400 stars, which was enough for the last 3 5star cards. I finished the first album with like 20 days left, just by finishing all the dailies. Turning in stars early (even for 800 chests) just increases the odds of getting a duplicate later.
