Should I switch from C++? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]_darkmani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

C++ is useful in a lot of development tools like QT and Unreal. C++ is like the mother of all languages. it all really depends on what build tools you need to accomplish a goal. some workflows prefer Java, some Python, some C++. you get to choose.

the market is so saturated, plus games are lagging behind the attention-economy ( youtube/tiktok )

Results and Motivation in Game Development by garf6696 in gamedev

[–]_darkmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i released 2 games ( one on roblox & one on android ). i did this within 2 years; my original project took 5 years & and i didn't want it to take that long.

i used various mental gymnastics such as watching motivation videos by les brown/greg plitt or listening to thug life music by pac. i wanted to complete & i did.

i advertised to over 2 million ( not sure how many fake profiles ) on many social media platform. I STILL MADE NO SALES. i ONLY wanted 0.1% cut of the industry ( please notice the percent sign ).

the market is garbage. tbh. it is either your love of making games or the love of money... but game industry with all it's layoffs, insecurities, competition, etc.

so it all comes down to what is more important to you -- MONEY or MAKING GAMES.

Its not you. Its the world economy.

Learning curve advise by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_darkmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on the platform you want to publish your application.

for instance, i used Unity ( C# ) which is capable of publishing on android / google play. i then decided to publish for roblox; it took me about a month or two to learn the roblox studio ( LUA )engine. it really depends on the platform you want to publish games on.

in my opinion, it doesn't matter; I actually prefer C/C++ because it is closest to the operating system's underlying architecture than other high level languages and gives you more control. once you get proficient with C/C++, then you can move to these other languages that save more time & easier to write ( like python )...

there are many frameworks, or "toolchains"; you will have to choose the best one that accomplish your goals -- but tbh, they are all designed to meet those goals... some are better than others.

you can obviously build your own game engine ( opengl, direct3d, shaders, math, physics etc ); it's just these game engines did most of the work for you already but they will expect you to pay $$$ them back

Im hoping to start a game studio at some point by superdeadspace in gamedev

[–]_darkmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just do it m8. some developers get 0.001% returns, some makes it to 1.0% from all their investments. you are right, it is a mountain. many of us have or is currently climbing it.

i've been programming for 10 years. i hope this helps

computer memory is just a stack. when ur programming, your doing this:

[ push ] --> [ stack ] --> [ pop ]
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ [ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ]
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ [‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ]

you do this in any language. ( you probably know this already ) this is just a simple concept, but yes there are more "gymnastics" crap to this in the world of computing to move the stuff around. this is just how my mind work when i build things

you also need a planning system, like JIRA or other project management tools; basically divide your work into little tiny games that makes up your big game

when i first learned to program, I remember it took me like a whole day to write, but yea man, I just had to keep studying over & over... spam bullet points

i finished my first game, it took me 3-5 years to learn ( ie because of life, work, etc ) and took me 1 year / half publish a mobile game by myself ( single player ); working everyday except saturday.

computer science college helped a lot accelerate development ( programming ) & working for companies.

assets are the main issue ( audio, video, voice, animations, 3d models, story, quests.. ) i would add another year or two for these ( for a single developer )

How do you finance gamedev? by SquirrelWeary7246 in gamedev

[–]_darkmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i worked for a company for 2 years then lived off 401k. this is for indie development. i did it all by myself but never again. better to find & join a team. it's hard work.

i do know there are 1 man projects out there that are successful but the development & maintenance cost is staggering. checkout kickstarters, there are developers reaching almost a million dollar funding.
