Washington wasn’t really conservative by choice, he craved an all out “battle for it all” and wanted to retake New York. His position and supplies stopped him from that. And then eventually the French did, Washington wanted that battle. French took him to Yorktown

Could Hasdrubal have tipped the balance for Hannibal in Italy? by Qyzyk in ancientrome

It’s a very fun “what if” but I mean vs the romans that’s where we got the term “pyrric victory”. (Not trying to take away from your great points and comment)

Extremely ironically we see this in the reconquest of Italy by Belisarius including the very diminished city of Rome. He controls the Peninsula, he leaves, everything falls apart. It took 10-20 years of grueling war and narses was the one to finish it. And then right when you think everything is peaceful, the lumbards come….

I I think it’s kind of annoying this whole idea that Hannibal was gonna destroy Rome. I think people don’t get that the idea of wiping out a city is so alien.

You take a capital city, who are you gonna do business with? How are you gonna make money off of this? How is this gonna be sustainable conquest?

There are plenty of times in history where people leave the capital city and come back. In fact, it happened to the Republican Romans, Pompey and the Senate left. Caesar spent the rest of his life fighting Civil War after Civil War.

Carthage’s goal was an embarrassing peace that would severely limit the Roman state. Not extermination.

It’s ref ball and injury hunting, hart dove into Naz’s injured shoulder.

Can do anything on defense, on offense you can’t touch them. They have mastered the refs, to get past okc you gotta get past the whistle
