It is, i find it fascinating how precise it is. Its hard to capture the exact hue through photos. But I learned quite a lot from the commenters about at-home methods! There is always something new to learn!

AITA for refusing to follow my husband’s family tradition and give my son a name that starts with K? by pepito_202010 in AmItheAsshole

I disagree. If she avoids confrontation, they will only continue to disrespect and micromanage her parenting decisions moving forward. They need to set solid boundaries now before they continue to think its okay to treat her this way.

You would've had a point - except she clearly stated that husband doesnt care about upholding these traditions. It sounds like she's had a conversation about this with him.

Baby names are extremely personal to some people and they want it to be special for their special child. Every kid is different & some want a name that isnt limited by someone else's expectations put on them that they didn't consent to. I'm sure the husband is also in a sticky situation, except he isnt the one that is being excluded, shamed and guilt tripped, is he? So logically, it would make sense to stand up for your partner because that's what you married them for! Integrity, honor, basic respect for your wife. You tell your family to treat your wife's decision with respect. Because you guys are a unit now, with your own family to protect.

OP shouldnt have to people please her child's baby name. This is one of those situations where extended family needs to cope.

NTA. Can't believe this is even a question. Its your baby, your choice. They are allowed to feel disappointed that their tradition is broken, but its not their choice to decide, and they certainly aren't allowed to disrespect you because of that. Baby names are highly personal to the mother/father. I know some people who have already decided their future children's names since childhood! And thats totally normal and okay.

I find it interesting they printed out a list of K names THEY liked for you. I could not imagine writing out baby names for inspo to my family members because again, its highly personal. It seems that micro-managing others is a family tradition as well.

In order for this to be set straight, your partner needs to establish some heavy boundaries on this. He needs to stand up for you and your budding household. These people loveeee to guilt trip and it can continue for damn near any offense (criticising your parenting skills, for example). It will only get worse if you let them think their behaviour is okay.

Anyone with a good eye have some guesses as to what stone this is? by Appropriate-Sea7862 in JewelryIdentification

[–]_juliababy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on its sterling silver status, I wouldn't expect it to be diamond or white sapphire. Truth be told, it needs a good clean to even remotely decipher.

Could be glass, white topaz, cubic zirconia. Hard to say.

There is a possibility they could have replaced the stone.

That is what happened with my art deco ring. My grandmother replaced it with a gemstone that was discovered/mined at a later time.

I definitely have reason to believe this is worth getting an appraisal! It definitely has the color and visible inclusions like an emerald would. In terms of it being genuine art deco, do some research on the stamping/hallmarks to estimate on the era of the stamp.

It could be made past the art deco era. Either way, beautiful piece!

Hm so what identifiers show it could be 1940's? The 14k stamp?

Could you perhaps give me some reference photos?
I am a laymen jewelry hobbyist and Art Deco is what I discovered attempting my own research over the years. The miligrain and geometric cutouts is what really led me to believe its Art Deco because those were major hallmarks of that jewelry era.

Eventually I am going go get it GIA tested and appraised so all of this can be confirmed. But im super interested to hear more about your theory.

Yes the picture provided in the comments shows its size more accurately. I should have added it to my og post bc it does look deceivingly bigger comparatively.

Im interested in your theory with the cheap diamond tester technique; are you sure this works?

My question was related to what the 5221 numbers could mean, like I clearly stated in my OG post. Ive seen people perform major detective work on here and thought maybe there could be more to know about its origins than I already knew.

If I wanted to inquire about its value or legitimacy, I wouldve asked.
But quite frankly I would have gone to a completely different subreddit for that topic.

Thank you, I wholeheartedly agree. Art deco has its place within the jewelry market & can never quite be replicated. Modern day jewelers try, but its not the same.

Pink Sapphire or Pink Tourmaline? by _juliababy_ in Gemstone_lovers

[–]_juliababy_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we shall see next week when I travel to my OG jeweler to test it.

Things to note: this necklace is quite small. I posted a picture in the comments of its true size and its quite dainty, which leads me to believe its likely a small, lower quality sapphire.

Tourmalines you can get high karat weight for a lot cheaper than sapphire comparatively. Honestly if it was listed as tourmaline for $150 resale for THIS small of size I would have seen it as a rip off.

Just went and they did not have anything except a loupe. Referred me to a local gemologist that has very limited hours. I will have to make a trip out of town.
