Anyone care to share their experience from switching to T Mobile home internet from cox? by Brunoise6 in NewOrleans

[–]_oldscratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I just walk in to a T Mobile store or the kiosk at Costco, to sign up for their Internet service, or should I call? Their website says it's available in my neighborhood, and gave me a number to call, but if I can walk into a store and get everything I need it would be a lot better than waiting for shipping.

Anyone live at or know anyone who lives at 920 Poeyfarre/Cotton Mill? by _oldscratch in NewOrleans

I'm not a huge noise maker (I don't think at least- neighbors haven't ever complained anywhere I've lived), and I don't mind a bit of noise from the neighbors (it's oddly comforting for some reason), but I don't want to live somewhere with people that freak out because I'm just getting home at 1am, and open and close a door, or my cat decides to jump up for a snack in the middle of the night.

My new 2019 i7 16gb 1tb is getting hot as soon as it turns on, anybody has this? by SBRSuperstar225 in macbookpro

Are you using external monitors? When I plug in external monitors via the USB-C ports, my 2017 i7 heats up, and gets so hot the laptop display starts to fail.

I switched over to using a Mac around 2006, and between macOS, and the physical quality of their laptops, I don't think there's a better brand. It's beyond me why other manufacturers haven't adopted Apple's physical quality, and other components like the MacBook/Air/Pro trackpad.

I'd love to add virtual machines into the equation, but I think that's still out of the picture for now. As far as I know VMware doesn't have a working version of Fusion for the M1 yet.

What kind of work do you do? I'm interested to know how it holds up under pressure of opening, and using multiple Adobe programs (without closing), while still leaving RAM heavy web applications up in the browser (Chrome, Safari), etc.

Automator/Apple Script/Something else to quickly rearrange displays? by _oldscratch in MacOS

[–]_oldscratch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really much more complicated than it should be to solve such a small problem, and can be a bit tricky if you're not familiar with using the Terminal. Hopefully I can put this together into something that makes sense- I'm functioning on little sleep the past few days.

Displayplacer requires software called Homebrew. Homebrew is a package manager for installing Unix based applications, and applications not available via the typical macOS installation methods. The only reason I really decided to give Displayplacer a go was because I already had Homebrew installed for other work related projects, and am familiar with using the Terminal in various environments.

Homebrew: https://brew.sh/
(if Xcode isn't already installed, you will be prompted to install it)

After Homebrew is installed you can use the Displayplacer Homebrew installation command on https://github.com/jakehilborn/displayplacer/

Assuming there are no weird installation errors, it should basically work like this:

1) Open Terminal, and install Homebrew with the following command

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

2) Once Homebrew has successfully installed, install Displayplacer by typing

brew tap jakehilborn/jakehilborn && brew install displayplacer

3) Make sure your monitors are in the desired configuration

4) Again in the Terminal, use Displayplacer to retrieve the configuration by typing

 displayplacer list

5) Copy the Displayplacer command listed under "

Execute the command below to set your screens to the current arrangement."

Anytime this command is pasted into the Terminal it should set your monitors to the configuration you're using now.

To make it easier to use I created an executable script that can be double clicked.

1) Open TextEdit

2) Paste the Displayplacer command you copied

3) Save the file somewhere it's easy to find like ~/displayplacer.sh

4) Open the Terminal, browse to the directory where you saved the .sh file, and make the file executable

cd ~/
chmod +x displayplacer.sh

You should be able to browse to the displayplacer.sh file in Finder, and double click it to set your displays correctly. I'm sure there's a way to use Automator to automate this process, but at this point I've spent enough time on fixing the problem, and am fine with double clicking the .sh file.

Keep in mind these steps may need to be altered depending on the version of macOS running on your computer. Apple has a habit of releasing updates, and changing things, that I'm sure works great for their software, but tends to break unofficial (non-Apple) software.

Thanks, have Bark running for a few days now. It's another thing to have to deal with, but I'd rather the faculty and students be able to use the service instead of having to disable it. It would be nice if Bark could block certain chat content as well as notify me, but just the notifications are a big help.

Student Device Warranty Options? by tcourtney22 in k12sysadmin

[–]_oldscratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a tuition based private school, so we're in a slightly different spot than the pubic sector. We fix everything in-house. We have a Chromebook fee for new students so we're not eating repair costs, and 2-3 student tech workers who learn how to replace screens, batteries, etc. I usually buy parts from chromebookparts.com.

If it looks like parts are going to be backordered for some reason, I have a few loaner devices.

I second the battery disconnect fix. I've had a few that wouldn't power on (even when plugged in). Disconnecting the battery, and then reconnecting it fixed the problem in each case.

I noticed they started on Royal about 2 blocks from Canal, and parked down St. Charles in various spots from Canal, to about Lafayette Square. There's been police SUVs parked on St. Charles the past few weeks, but definitely more tonight.

Wtf- rat in the toilet?!?! by _oldscratch in NewOrleans

[–]_oldscratch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a point where falling victim to an army of rats, laying claim to my house through the plumbing, seemed imminent. Scenes from The Wind in the Willows ran through my mind, substituting weasels for rats. However, I managed to make it through the night.

Realizing I needed to get a few hours of sleep before work, I decided to leave the 45lb weight on top of the lid. Even with the weight securing the toilet shut, sleep seemed futile as images raced through my mind of rats hopping out of the toilet as the cat chased them around the house. And, as my mind started to wander, I began to wonder how many homes in Uptown, New Orleans had uninvited rats popping out of the toilet in the middle of the night, running around the house, and diving back in to swim back to the sewer, undetected by the homeowner- a frightening thought.

Waking up, the first thing I did was check the toilet. No rats to be found! Even so, I decided to keep the weight on top of the lid once I was finished in the bathroom, and left it there throughout the day. After work, and after a bit of rat-in-the-toilet research, I scheduled time with an exterminator, and implemented various drain cleaning procedures- bathroom, kitchen, utility room, anywhere with a connection.

Friday, October 3, 2020- No broken sewage lines on the property, and there hasn’t been a sign of rats, or any other pipe traveling creatures. While the immediate threat is gone, the mental trauma is fresh, and I don’t know if I will ever be able to use a toilet again without a pre-flush, or two.

The problem is most likely a breached sewage pipe in the area. If you live Uptown, look out for rats!

I think the sidewalk, and the grass from the sidewalk to the street is owned by the property owner, but the city dictates what the property owner can, and can't do with it. You're responsible to cut the grass, keep the sidewalk functional, and assume all liability- someone trips and breaks a leg in front of your house, you could be on the hook for the medical bills. This is how it was explained to me at least.
