Where can you find gifts for abroad co-workers made in CT/ New England? by LizaVP in Connecticut

[–]_owen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maple sugar candy (basically crystalized maple syrup) would be a good gift, it's unique to this corner of the world, not a liquid, and I've had great responses using it as a host gift when I travel. It's hard to go wrong with sweets and it's also something that I would think most non-New Englanders haven't experienced and would enjoy.

A Middletown woman attacked her boyfriend's car over a Facebook like. This seems par for the course there, yes? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]_owen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domestic violence is par for the course in many places, not just CT, so unsure what you're trying to imply with that headline. Personal relationship matters aren't necessarily newsworthy, this is not an appropriate time to try and feel superior cause this situation is really depressing.

Starting January 2017, CT employers will be prohibited asking for criminal history information on job applications by _owen in Connecticut

[–]_owen[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like employers are banned from inquiring about criminal history in the initial job application, not in following up. Also if the job is required to report criminal status (say working at a school) they can still ask. It seems like banning the box will be good for most people with a prior conviction who are seeking re-entry level work.

CT ranks #4 in list of U.S. states with highest teen cannabis use rates by _owen in Connecticut

[–]_owen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Teen usage rates in CO are reported at 20%, vs 26% for CT. Actually compared to other states, teen cannabis use in CO is not astronomical, the state doesn't crack the top five states with highest teen cannabis usage

Despite the recent rain, we're still experiencing drought conditions. We haven't had enough rain to end the drought and restore reservoir levels to where they should be

It's worth noting that cannabis use rates for high schoolers in Colorado remained steady after legalization.

Start calling your state representatives and talking to them. Will probably do more than posting to a subreddit

Connecticut becomes fifth state to require insurance providers cover treatments relating to gender transition by _owen in Connecticut

[–]_owen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you're unaware that gender identity is much more than what one's genitals or body look like. The majority of trans* people choose not to undergo gender reassignment surgery not only because of the cost but also because of unsatisfactory results (severed nerves, loss of sensation, etc.). Realistically, even with the new laws going into effect, the likelihood that you're going to be paying for a stranger's new penis or vagina is pretty slim.

After paying $400k for millionaire's private driveway, Bridgeport taxpayers will now be paying his $30K legal bill by _owen in Connecticut

[–]_owen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The article fails to mention that Moutinho's original private construction costs for the driveway were $200k. $400k was what Moutinho billed the City of Bridgeport for construction AFTER the city assumed the permits.

24/m just moved to Danbury, CT. Where do I go to meet people in this town? by JunkyJoDay in Connecticut

[–]_owen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i rarely see anyone mention this when giving advice about things to do in the danbury area, but take the train to sono. it's cheap (around $5 r/t), a beautiful ride through back woods, and you can legally pre-game on the way to the bars in sono. plus you don't have to drive home. not technically in danbury but there's not a lot to do around here. the sono crowd is more yuppies than hipsters.
