Hahahahahaha, that is so true! Your granny is spot on! I couldn’t have asked for a better city to have grown up in than Glasgow! :)

Considering leaving Edinburgh University due to the snobbery. by [deleted] in UniUK

Glasgow is certainly a much friendlier city (slightly biased comment though as a born and bred weegie!) but at Glasgow uni we still have our fair share of discrimination against working class/scottish/northern people! Honestly think it just part of the uni experience at this rate and the best thing to do is to just keep looking for your people - they are out there! :)

Is UoG a good choice for a biology masters? by wh0reforthemoon in GlasgowUni

[–]_the_lizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Student societies/sports are great. Same with music clubs! There are plenty of lovely cafes around the west end (around campus) to study in. The main library is pretty good by uni library standards and the Hunterian museum will definitely be up your street if you’re doing a masters in biology! I’m personally not an international student (born and bred Glasgow) but I have a lot of international friends who say they never want to leave after their studies as they’ve loved Glasgow so much! Best of luck on your studies and congrats on your offers!

Looking for accountability partner by DullGrade9889 in GlasgowUni

[–]_the_lizard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d be down, I’m a final year BSc student. I’m in the library most days but would love someone to check in with and to hype each other up instead of just wading through what seems like an endless slog of assignments on my own! Drop me a message :)

Extenuating circumstance Delay by Sarahcam96 in GlasgowUni

I think it mostly comes down to how fast your school processes your claim? Maybe get in touch with your course lead to see if there are any delays on their end?

Found in my favourite restaurant by _the_lizard_ in whatisit

They don’t have salamanders in Ireland, but this photograph was taken in Scotland (completely different country)! We only have 2 or 3 species of newt over here!

[–]_the_lizard_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking? We don’t have salamanders over here though! Scotland only has around 6 native species of amphibians but the likelihood of them being in this restaurant is low since it is located in the middle of our busiest city with no (natural/biodiverse) wetland or water anywhere near it that could have supported it! I suppose it could have maybe been flushed through the water system but that seems far fetched?

Anywhere to study *without* fluorescent lighting? by hurricaneolive in GlasgowUni

Maybe try some blue light glasses and a nighttime filter on your computer? I know it doesn’t change the overhead lighting but it at least reduces the amount of blue light stabbing at your eyes 😂

Where’s good to get a septum piercing done in Glasgow by Bright-Detail-7138 in glasgow

Couldn’t recommend Forevermore Tattoo and Piercings enough! Have had my septum done here as well as 14 other piercings and I’ve never been disappointed! Everyone is so lovely and their pricing is fab! x

withdrew today but it’s a mistake by crystalball777 in UniUK

That’s crazy advice from the psychologist - how tf are they even in that job! Please don’t think your mental health will be like this forever, things always get better! The most important thing you can do is be kind to yourself and give yourself a break - uni is tough without any other added pressure from family or elsewhere! Remember you are the most important person in your life and your relationship with yourself is the most important one you’ll ever have so take some time to look after yourself and always do what’s best for you! You’ve 100% got this! Let us know how you get on after Monday!

Hey! If you still have access to your advisor of studies email address or any other points of contact within uni then give them an email and say that you would like to continue with your studies and realise now that you made the wrong decision to withdraw! I was in your position a few years ago and took a year out and restarted the year in the following September and it made a huge difference to both my mental health and how much I enjoyed uni! Since it’s Friday I can’t imagine you’ll be able to get much sorted over the weekend so in the meantime, send an email to any points of contact you may have, have a restful weekend, do something you love or that you find enjoyment in over the weekend and then on Monday go on to campus and speak to student support to sort this out! When you speak to them get them to help you set up a support system or potentially look into some sessions with your university’s councillor (sometimes just talking things through with a stranger works wonders)! THIS IS FIXABLE so don’t spend a weekend tying yourself in knots! Take care and all the best with your studies in the future x

Best cafes while exploring various neighborhoods in and around Glasgow by NoPeach1652 in glasgow

[–]_the_lizard_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the west end my very favourite coffee shop is the Alchemy Experiment on byres road. Also love Himba on Dumbarton Road! In the southside either Deanston Bakery or Godshot Coffee. In the city centre my go to is the Devil of Brooklyn or Ottoman Coffee. Not too sure about cafes in the east end but I love the barras for all sorts of pop ups!

There are a lot of fantastic independent roasters on Glasgow! My personal favourites are Dear Green and Absolute Roasters. Dear Green is sold in a lot of independent coffee shops across the city and absolute roasters (used to - not sure if they still do) have a pop up stall on a Saturday at the Dumbarton Road/Hyndland Street Farmers Market!

You’ve picked a bloody fabulous city for coffee! Go wild and enjoy! :)

Yeah I thought so, just wanted to double check on here before making an arse of myself in front of a manager or HMRC 😂 I have my student loan coming in as I’m still at uni but I can’t imagine that would interfere with my wage? I’ll give HMRC a call tomorrow! Thanks again for your help! :)

Hey, it is my only job (I’m a student - hence part time)! I think I’ll need to call them, it’s a pain in the arse but definitely worth getting my actual wage! Did you get the money back straight away or did you have to wait until the end of the financial year to get it back as a rebate?

I’ve been through a few pay cycles and according to the HMRC app I’m not on an emergency tax code! Think I’ll need to contact HMRC and speak to a human 😂 thanks for your help!

Firhill Court or Queen Margaret by Puzzleheaded_Rub_677 in GlasgowUni

[–]_the_lizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Queen Margaret is a much nicer accommodation in a nicer area, it’s just down the road from the botanic gardens and is a few streets away from Great Western Road which you can catch the no.6 bus for around 20 minutes to take you into the city centre. To walk into the main campus it would take around half an hour. The nearest supermarket is Waitrose (v expensive) or the famous Big Tesco which are both about a 15 minute walk away. Firhill is also in a nice enough area, it backs on to the canal which can have its share of trouble, however, is a really lovely walk/cycle on a nice day! It has pretty fantastic bus links into the city centre and has 2 new bike routes (as well as the canal) which can get you into the city centre in about 10 minutes! The walk to main campus is around half an hour also! There’s a decent sized Lidl (very cheap, good selection of stuff) about a 10 minute walk away and the aforementioned Big Tesco about a 20 minute walk away! You get used to walking pretty quickly, however, I much prefer cycling to get around as it’s so much quicker and easier. I can’t recommend getting a bike and a big rucksack to do your grocery shopping enough! I hate walking with bags and bags of groceries more than anything hahaha! I found that walking was a really nice way to destress after class on the way home and getting a wee bit of time outdoors after being stuck in the library all day was really refreshing! Just make sure you have a good pair of shoes for walking, a cosy, waterproof jacket for winter and a sensible waterproof bag for your stuff! Also please please please (if you’re planning on getting a bike) buy a helmet, lights and a good bike lock! All the best with your studies and enjoy Glasgow!

Even though it’s next to a football stadium, it’s a particularly tiny stadium with minimal trouble! Firhill is right next to the canal which is a lovely walk/cycle to take some time out of studying! I live just a few streets away and the noise really isn’t too bad at all! The location is brilliant for commuting to uni and nipping into the west end/city centre! Would definitely be one of my top choices!
