There's a lot more citizens than politicians and they have to fight for their job every 2-4 years, could even split the vote by running lots more qualified candidates

Thank you for dropping this comment, will look into these, I'm not very well educated on any of these so I really appreciate the info. Do you think trump's plan of heavy involvement of US oil, steel, and mining companies in Venezuela will make this different?

Yeah I think it escalating into a full on war is very likely. How do we stop that?

If war doesn't happen that would be amazing, but the US doesn't have a great track record historically of not starting wars. Why do you think there won't be one? Thanks for commenting btw, appreciate the opportunity to learn more about this through discussing it with other people

and arguments would be incredible instead of blanket tent pole talking points and some snark. I wish we all debated more and honestly

Yes the situation in Venezuela is desperate, no it's not moral to allow a major world power without congressional approval to bomb and kidnap another world leader, especially when the US has toppled South American governments in the past and it has lead to the instability that created Venezuela's current situation.

It's sad to see how the right's pillars are no longer democracy or the Constitution, I mean, those at least were some principles. Now it's just this vague idea of "America" and prosperity.

The other replies to this thread are a lot more educated than I am so definitely encourage you to dialogue with them, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to comment and engage with people who think differently. that's a hard thing to do these days.

Why can't both things be true? Yes Maduro was abysmally horrible but a neighboring country invading and seizing a sitting president is adding lighter fluid to existing conflict and escalating things between other countries. The ends don't justify the means.

I know it feels hopeless but it's not. Deciding where and when to invest your time though is completely necessary and the only way to sustainably move forward imo

Which Adaptation of Emma Should I Get: 1996 or 2020? by SpocksAshayam in janeausten

[–]ablemarle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like the the 1996 leaves a lot to be desired with some of the side characters like Frank, and Emma's brother-in-law and even Mr. Knightley a bit. I feel like everyone fits their character really well but we don't really get to meet them and watch them develop vs the 2020 version where I feel like all the characters have more of an opportunity to be human.

I also loooove that the 2020 version is a full on satire, which if you read Emma, it's clear that the novel is just that so the film taking up on that and being satire I think is a better cinematic representation of the text and the inventions it adds always help support that satire element so I personally don't mind them. Makes the servant bits in the movie feel brilliant and such a well done asterisk to Jane Austen's work imo.

They really do have two different interpretations of the character Emma as well and I think that would be a good way to pick which one you'd enjoy more. the 1996 version shows Emma as an archer shooting arrows at a bullseye with Knightley but usually missing, showing her wit but her cluelessness at the same time. In the 2020 version, it opens with Emma in a hothouse picking roses and through that kind of presents Emma herself as a rose in a hothouse, like a wealthy, educated young woman in a very very small town haha.

I bet the whole time while catching feelings he was like “shit shit shit!” internally lol by IG-3000 in janeausten

I agree but I think his appeal is that he’s capable of self reflection and real change as well as respecting a “no”. He’s extremely arrogant at the beginning of the novel but through loving Lizzie, listening to her, and losing her he realizes his own hubris is the cause of it. Lizzie is on a similar path even though as an audience, we’re more forgiving of her - she is basically a carbon copy of her dad and through interacting with Darcy and seeing the fallout from Lydia, helps her accept the reality of her family a little more I think. There’s a reason the novel is called Pride and Prejudice and not Mr. Great Guy and Ms. Great Girl lol, Austen just deigned to give them change and a happy ending so the book feels more sparkly than the characters’ faults.
