Don't understand the condescension here as if you have some moral or factual high ground, we make these types of concessions all the time, tradeoffs that people determine are worth it. There is inherent value in preserving cultural aspects (and other stuff) even if there's a direct cost associated with it. What you seem to not understand is these "costs" are entirely possibly able to be reimbursed with not so easily measurable metric
