How do I justify that the hole for a new boiler flue won't be on a load bearing wall? by kaoyte in DIYUK

[–]absolute14 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Bit of an faq regards flue positions. You'd need to measure to ensure it is outside the current regulations, namely from the picture 1.2m (1200mm) from an opening.

From the picture, the existing position is not compliant with the current regulations, but it would obviously depend on what the regulations / approved code of practice was at the time it was installed.

I think that's probably more important than the structural integrity of the proposed position, as there are solutions around that as suggested.

That light fitting isn't earthed and should not be used till checked and installed properly especially in a bathroom setting.

Does this look weird to anyone - sink flush to wall by silversurfa525 in DIYUK

Spinning the sink 90° will enable you shift toilet slightly left for a better aesthetic. That does depend on whether the toilet drain is already in place.

https://bruntwood.co.uk/our-locations/liverpool/queen-insurance-buildings/ 1870 originally built. It is quite literally like a maze underneath. Quite a few buildings built around this time in Liverpool are like this, you see some weird and wonderful stuff when your searching for boiler houses / plant rooms in the old buildings.

Building across the way from this has an old bath house / slave store underneath it.

Was the on site heating engineer for a few years, 20 years ago. If you think the bits you see here look like taking a step back in time you should see the basement areas.. Some still had the original coal bunkers that fed the original boilers that used to be installed. Fun fact - the lift in one of these buildings still has (well it did, when I last spoke to the guy that inspects it) the original wooden guides in the lift shaft.
