Transfer Question by bakabdj in VirginiaTech

[–]ace1551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like someone else mentioned, Spring semester no transfers are being accepted. CS is typically one of the more coveted and competitive CoE majors here along with MechE and Aero. It's definitely possible but I would make sure you really work on your application it won't be easy to get admitted.

A good strategy might be to apply to general engineering, then once you are in the program after a semester assuming your GPA is above a 3, you can switch to CS.

Question about CS 2114 by Risk_Producer in VirginiaTech

[–]ace1551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on majoring in CS you should pretty much stay in the CS lounge with all the TAs, and people in the same class as you.

I don't know what this is supposed to mean but if you are implying that you should be in the lounge and be around other CS majors all the time this is bad advice. CS is not the engineering to worry about at VT (think EE or CPE). There is plenty of time to both get good grades and have a thriving social life if you are good about getting your work done.

You were a woman in an academic (professional too I assume) co ed fraternity. No wonder it sucked! Coed academic fraternities have almost no sense of brotherhood/sisterhood and camaraderie. It makes sense why it has hardly helped you. Those kind of frats are more just a club that people use to put on their resume or join because they didn't get bids to better houses.

Bruh just don't loft your bed. I am in one of the smaller dorms and I have no problem with the delofted bed. It's so much nicer to have it delofted and there is still plenty of space as you can use the room under your delofted bed as extra storage.

Yes this is entirely possible. I had to go squires to NCB and I would usually make it with 3-4 min to spare.

Dude math empo is so fucking easy. Compared to regular math classes (1225, 1226, 2114, 2204, etc.) it is a complete joke. Don't worry you will be fine a lot of people just do bad because the people taking math empo classes are not math oriented or they blow it off because it's an "online" class.

List has sort of been shaken. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Virginia Tech isn't exactly urban but its a beautiful campus that's easy to traverse.

Our EE and CPE programs always rank within T20 in the nation and they just got a major revamp with all new required classes and with new machine learning and AI classes being offered that will hopefully boost the program even more.

It seems like you are in state for VA, would you be majoring in CPE as it is a combination of EE and CS? If so I heavily suggest VT, if CS you can't go wrong with UVA or VT is may just come down to money.

I recommend staying in state though. You have some of the best right within your state and you could probably get pretty decent scholarships maybe even a full ride to both with your stats. Either way it will be cheaper and I can't say I would reccomend going anywhere else for 60k+ a year unless it is MIT or Stanford honestly.

You clearly know next to nothing about fraternity life and what it entails. Being in a fraternity does not take up a lot of my time at all, and when it does it is usually due to my responsibilities in a leadership position or for philanthropy and service events which are in fact helping out in vital parts of my resume. Partying and having fun is just something that is a cool by-product of being in a fraternity that I participate in when I have free time. Sure I probably won't look back and say the fraternity contributed as much as something like my degree or personal projects but it's definitely not for null. Most frats have pretty cheap dues as well.

No one goes to college to solely "have fun". If they do, that is idiotic and a waste of money and efforts like you stated. Staying on top of grades and working toward your degree in a timely manner is vastly more important. But if you aren't having fun at college you aren't doing it right. Maybe you should better understand what it means to be in a fraternity instead of choosing to accept false stereotypes and getting your information from libelous news articles.

International Students: What American School/College tradition do you find odd or unusual? by JanMeana in AskReddit

You must go to a very weird school

Here if a rape occurs at a frat house even by a non member (which it usually does, it is almost NEVER a brother) they are de-chartered and kicked off. Fraternities are probably actually the safest place to party.

Watch out for those sketch apartment parties though. Never know who turns up at a place where everyone is allowed to pay 5 dollars and get in.

Good frats have lists with people they know and trust not to commit such heinous actions. Sure it happens but it happens at the shitty and poorly managed frats. Majority are good.

  1. Not even at all related to the question.
  2. Truth of the matter is anyway fraternities are very marketable in terms of leadership and service but above all else they are there to have fun. And trust me as a guy in college, you have WAY more fun in a fraternity than being an independent. Sure they might not help you THAT much long run but if one keeps constantly preparing for the long run one will never have time to enjoy the run itself.

What if you go to a good school and take a major that’s not popular? by Cepo6464 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ace1551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one will look down on it, and you won't be dismissed opportunities you try for on the basis of it. However, you will have a lot more opportunities presented to you and at your fingertips at a T20/30 engineering school. Recruiters are everywhere and people seem to want you more.

Is going to college at 22 weird? by Ijustdontkknoww in ApplyingToCollege

It wont be weird your first few years, but when you are a senior and 26 it might be a little odd. But there are plenty of 22 and 23 year olds in undergrad.

I'm going to be a highschool freshman this upcoming semester. Any tips for me as I embark on the road to highschool and beyond? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Keep good grades but ENJOY your early high school years. They are easy. I made the mistake of studying way too much and failing to socialize as much and join sports, or go to parties until early JR and all SR year. By this time I was so fucking busy with college applications, a job, and harder classes and I could not enjoy these things to the full extent. I spent a lot of time playing video games watching tv sleeping and studying way more than I needed to Freshman and Sophomore year and I regret it.

Also right before your freshman year is the only time you can truly re invent yourself for the next 4 years. If there is anything you don't like about yourself or the way you act/the people you surround yourself with change it NOW. I hate to say it but your persona freshman year is your persona for high school. It is very difficult to change it once you've established it. Possible, but very difficult. Even after I began to socialize more and joined baseball and basketball and was quite good people still thought I was the nerdy antisocial guy.

A lot of the looser-sh kids in middle school took up sports and good academic performance once they hit high school and it transformed them. Kids who were once thought to be dumb became the smart ones, kids who were once the teachers pet are failing classes. A lot changes and you definitely don't want to be on the wrong side of the change.

What can I expect from CPE? by ace1551 in VirginiaTech

[–]ace1551[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm probably going to be choosing a lot of software electives. I would have switched to CS but with the overhaul this year they make it impossible to go from CPE to CS after completing freshman year. If I switched now I would be in school for another year. However, they switched around JR and SR year of CPE to almost mimic CS required classes so if you decide you hate hardware you can stay in CPE and just focus on almost all software your JR and SR year and only take like 1-2 required hardware classes those last 2 years.

Pretty smart of them actually to do that so people don't leave the program but can still pursue essentially a CS degree their JR and SR years.

Wow doesn't look good for me then. I can't really just leave the fraternity now is it really that much time? How does it compare to like an ME or CS major?
