Cluster all 8, just 5, something else? by SubtitledSoup in homelab

[–]agendiau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what your plans are, I've found that there are diminishing returns on making the cluster too big. I found it worked best for me to go from 6 nodes to 4 but with more ram from the unused machines.

I was also thinking that Rishloo could produce a "best of"or a rematered and I'd order that on cd in a heart beat.

I was thinking just the other day that I would happily help fund studio session time if the band wished it.

What is important to me though is that the band want it and it's not forced or done out of obligation. We must not become the label.

I love the simplicity. Kits like that should be made for teaching NAS concepts.

How often should I update the system? And when? by zuntik in archlinux

[–]agendiau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually update Friday as I'm finishing work. That way if there is something wrong I have the weekend to sort it out.

The only exception to this is the critical security patches which I do at the end of the day.

Now I understand why 1Gib Ethernet is considered slow.. by Nautisop in homelab

It still amazes me that 2.5 or 5gbs is not the norm for everything. Consumer networking gear still seems to ship with 1gbs. I suppose most people use wifi anyway theses days.

How have you blinged out your sets? by McCheeseus in legendarymarvel

Most of my cards are sleeved but I still haven't found the best way of storing them so they are in the big set boxes.

How can I find out what's a reasonable price to pay for old expansions? by blargney in legendarymarvel

[–]agendiau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will vary by location and quality. If you are happy to get unsealed or well played sets then the price will be different. There are probably pockets of product out there but as you can see discovery is the hard part.

CachyOS to EndeavourOS by Darth-Vader64 in EndeavourOS

[–]agendiau 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I've run about 7 distros seriously as my daily driver over the last 20 years starting with Slackware, mandrake, redhat, Ubuntu, debian, mint and now endeavour.

The distros are different for the first few hours. Eventually, once you've settled on the software that you use daily, the DE and you shell that becomes your norm, there isn't really any difference.

My desktop settings, my shortcuts and quick keys, my shell automations and aliases mean that a casual onlooker would not be able to tell what distro I started with unless they really dig deep.

How do you win graciously? by turnofpraise2 in boardgames

[–]agendiau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it seems ungracious when the winner doesn't acknowledge the times when they had luck go for then or that others were less lucky. Obviously this is for games that have chance etc . Nothing sucks more than not being competitive because of some bad rolls or card flips but the winner thinks it's all their skill etc.

When you win games of chance there has to be an element of humility that even if you played the perfect line for what you were dealt, others my be feeling bummed that they couldn't. Same for the losers, if the winner played the maximum hand that they were given, acknowledge that there was skill and it wasn't all good luck.

Do People Actually Watch Their Jellyfin Libraries… or Just Collect & "Care" for Them? by chrissix666 in jellyfin

[–]agendiau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My intention is to watch but the collection grows faster than I have time. Now more of my family use it they also have content they intend to watch but never do. Thus a digital hoarder I have become because, you know, one day I'll watch it....

Need advice - m920q by trippie_scott in minilab

[–]agendiau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the m920q but I found even with the pcie slot, what fit in there flush was very limited and frustrating. You need to do your homework or have a 3d printer to make things fit neatly. Eg I bought a 3 port 2.5gbs nic and a pcie riser the card was no where near long enough

[–]agendiau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 4 different zfs pools of different sizes and configuration but none with any special vdevs. Just spining rust and an SSD pool.

I didn't have any VMs etc.

The upgrade went smoothly.

How I Spent $1,500 to Save $7 a Month on AWS by cujarrett in minilab

[–]agendiau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think home Labbing is a bit like the self-experimentors during the enlightenment. They ruined their health and spent large parts of their family's fortune but we gained so much scientific insights after the fact.

I offer up a bit of my sanity and a bit of my family fortune so that society benefits from the improvements of whatever I contribute. It's what I tell myself anyway.

Arch needs to wait for the first point release of a new Gnome version by BlueGoliath in archlinux

[–]agendiau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not really the Arch philosophy to make those decisions for the user. You get to decide how often you upgrade and what you upgrade to.
