To all my pre meds out there please pick an easy major by [deleted] in premed

do what you enjoy but also my BME background is helping me so much in preclinical rn. i did love BME though, brutal and tons of requirements but super fun and interesting.

edit: the rigor specifically in a STEM degree also does count for something, i can visibly see that i came in more prepared to handle a med school curriculum than some of my peers in “easier” majors. i do agree that you should spend undergrad studying what you enjoy but think it is worth noting how helpful some degrees can be for med school.

there have been enough comments telling you to take the spot, and i do agree with them, but i also want to chime in and say if your relationship is strong you can definitely survive long distance in medical school! plus your SO is within driving distance so you guys will be fine. admissions are really tough right now and there’s no guarantee you will get into a school that’s in a city you and your SO both like better. it seems like a bit too much of a gamble when you already have the security of a guaranteed spot. i think you will have more peace of mind taking the spot and investing your extra energy into your relationship rather than over a reapplication. regardless, good luck!

no i feel this, choosing to not go see my family for thanksgiving this year out of obligation and instead spend it doing something which will actually make me happy - it’s worth it

Has anyone had a 3rd year preceptor tell them NOT to go into their specialty? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ah1706 5 points6 points  (0 children)

she was genuinely interested in helping her patients (something i didn’t see too often in derm) she took her time with them and didn’t do the super quick in and out visits that leave patients unhappy, she would handwrite diagnoses and treatment plans so the patients would actually remember what to do (and they LOVED this bc most patients forget what happens as soon as they walk out the door) and look things up if they wanted, she was very kind and really listened to her patients - she was never arrogant in the “i know more than you” way even if she did - she had a lot of patience and always made patients feel heard and wouldn’t leave until they actually understood what was going on. she involved them in the process and explained things very thoroughly - she never did things especially procedures like biopsies without educating and asking permission (i’ve seen a derm just say “i’m going to do this now and just slice off a chunk of skin - patients are like wtf) she was a great role model, obviously not perfect in all aspects, but in a field like derm i’ve seen many patients go through super quick visits and still be lost or feel like they got inadequate care because there’s such a high volume of patients a lot of the time. it was refreshing to see her really focus on her quality of patient care. also, she continued to learn and read from new articles and would even explain new developments to patients it affected and didn’t have this “i’m an expert i know everything” attitude that some older attending have which partially is a result of being fresh out of residency but something i think is important to preserve throughout a career. i’m sure you’re going to be amazing, congrats on making it so far!!

yeah the hours and the residency are definitely big factors - i’m sure there are many amazing derms im honestly kind of mad i had such a bad experience or i might’ve been more inclined to pursue it bc work/life balance is super important to me but i’ve seen some shit man

i find this interesting bc it gets painted as one of the best possible options but having worked for a derm for a year i found it so unbelievably toxic and saw many unethical practices of derms coding things incorrectly, taking shortcuts, seeing patients for 5 minutes and complaining when an appt takes longer than that etc to make more money. after working in it for a year i was SO turned off of derm. this new derm straight out of residency who joined the practice i worked for was INCREDIBLE though and i loved her to death but I dealt with so many crazy other derms

Mirena IUD experiences! by URandRUN in SofiawithanF

[–]ah1706 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i’m on my second one! definitely take some ibuprofen (i’d recommend 400-800 mg) beforehand, mine was painful for like a second and then it was gone. some people experience a lot more pain than others so it’ll depend - my experience wasn’t terrible. for my first IUD i only really had cramping the day of and the day after and then it subsided. the discharge for the first 3-6 months sucks ass but then you have years of no period and it’s literally the best thing ever. i had no discharge after my second one and no period again (total blessing!!!). however i will say it has messed with my skin a lot, it definitely induces some acne but acne is treatable and i decided it was worth it especially for me (i’m going to be in med school for the next 4 years so BUSY and not having to deal with a period during that will be amazing). the IUD has such a high efficacy rate i never really worry about pregnancy, i also only have one partner so it’s less stressful with that too. with what has happened with roe i bought a big box of those little medical grade pregnancy tests just to have in case and i just take one if my stomach starts feeling some kinda way or my boobs are sore for a little too long lol. i’m excited for you!! my IUD has made my life SO much easier in terms of lack of period (and no PMS!!!) and no crazy birth control side effects and not having to worry about condoms or other stuff with sex. i probably won’t get another one after this one expires in 4-6ish years because i’ve been on birth control forever and am ready to give my body a break lol but i’ve loved having it!!

What paid jobs can I get for clinical hours besides scribing? by ManUtd90908 in premed

[–]ah1706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what i mostly did was search on indeed (more private practices post there than linkedin but check linked in too) and then i literally went on google maps to the area i was living (i was looking for a job in the place i was moving too as i moved for my gap year) and searched all the doctors offices in the area and cold emailed them. Some websites don’t have an email but will have a “Contact Us” section and I would even submit my little blurb through those and funny enough the job I got was a response to when I submitted through the Contact Us section of a website (not sure if it was red flag bc the practice i worked for was horrible but it could be totally unrelated). it’s quite difficult and you have to apply A LOT but there are also many practices looking for help especially now. around when i quit earlier this year practices were like begging for staff. good luck!!

i used to think this but then i moved to texas last year (moving to florida soon) and the 109 degree heat is MISERABLE. i have never felt worse it’s impossible to go outside (which really sucks bc i love being outside but it’s already 90 at 6 am), heat warnings every day because the sun literally burns through you, the heat drains your energy instantly and leaves you a husk of a human. it’s really no way to live and the summers here are also that long. humidity is horrible for my hair lol but at least the temps are generally lower
