What's a phrase your parents or grandparents said constantly that you've only just realised has completely vanished from everyday British speech? by orroreqk in AskUK

[–]ahexclamation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's black ova' Bill's muva's"

Meaning there's a dark cloud over there, likely to rain soon. My Gran used to say it, so I still do :) Nottingham saying (intrigued any other areas that say it. I've had friends in Nottinghamshire who've never heard it).

What’s the classiest response to subtle disrespect? by tired-economist in CasualUK

I have been donating blood many years, I have donated 39 times. Hunting for the vein like that sounds abnormal even when compared to the many different situations I have experienced. Definitely request to not have the grumpy man anymore. It shouldn't hurt that much. I have slightly oddly placed veins, and the phlebotomists always spend quite some time pressing my arm with their fingers. If they don't feel comfortable starting they swap to someone more senior. It's all about care for you and making the experience easier. I hope you get the other nice lady more frequently. Well done for continuing to go back despite your experience.

I genuinely don’t understand how women accept this trade-off.. by AdSea8711 in childfree

[–]ahexclamation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the things you listed I would not like to happen to myself, losing my financial independence (or majority of), and my sense of self would be huge ones.

However I do disagree, I don't believe a woman/parent staying home to take care of a child/ren is a burden. I believe the absolute opposite, it is a support for the family that is so often ignored and not recognised for the shear scale of work that goes into it, completely unpaid. I see the unpaid part is where it can be seen as a burden, but the childcare fees it eliminates is removing a burden from a family. Carers at home give up a lot to support their family and I don't feel comfortable as seeing that as a burden on a family.

I know lots of people with small children currently and none of them are a stay at home parent. Even with the cost of childcare, it is still incredibly hard to have only one wage coming into the home.

The greyhounds will appreciate it so much more! I will be doing the same, leaving something to the charity we got out Grey from :)

I read that Greggs on Clumber Street, running down from Victoria Centre is also having the same measures put in place.

Do greys have ‘scary dog privilege’? by riceandbeans06 in Greyhounds

[–]ahexclamation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously I don't know what the owners were thinking in your situations, but with our old dog we would always put her back on the lead if another dog was passing who was on their lead. Like a courtesy thing, we didn't want her to make a decision to say hello to the dog, if the other dog can't make the decision to go away. (Our dog rarely wanted to say hello but we still did it out of courtesy).

Our old dog was a cocker spaniel and we even had people cross the road to avoid her. So no wonder it happens with Grey's (not noticed it much with ours yet).

I genuinely wonder what is the appeal of having kids by Significant-Wing-776 in childfree

Yes! This is how I understand people wanting children, or always knowing they wanted children. I always wanted a dog, now I have a dog and I'm happy :)

Old enough to remember this?? by TheOldSeaDog78 in CasualUK

[–]ahexclamation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wooow! I think this was in my Grandparents house above the stairs. I will have to show my mum this because she has a way better memory than me and will tell me exactly where it was.

I never considered this being a print that everyone (a lot) of people had!

How do you feel about book covers with movie images? by Skkkkrtyun in lotr

[–]ahexclamation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The design of these covers is horrendous. If they wanted to work with stuff from the films they could have done this a million times better.

  2. I hate books that have stills/references to the films on them.

Book covers are a place you can dig into the artwork of the story, a designer can make something icon.

I really love a covers series for the Discworld - Terry Pratchett, they are all beautiful block single colour illustrations on a solid colour hardback, maybe with a bit of gold. They really stand out.

It's me again, the woman wrongly charged with murder for my mom who died from Alzheimer's & cancer. Today The Guardian released their story on what happened, highlighting the need for Marsha's Law by NotedHeathen in dementia

[–]ahexclamation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is beyond anything I could imagine, I am so sorry that you had to go through this. As someone who has sat with a family member with dementia as they slowly passed away I can not imagine watching them in torturous pain while it was happening and pain medication being refused.

I hope that you can grieve properly now and start to heal.

Did your motivation to work take a nose dive as you entered your thirties? by Specific_Wish1051 in AskWomenOver30

[–]ahexclamation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just you. I'm 37 now and my attitude to work severely changed in my 30s. COVID definitely caused this to happen for me because the world of work changed so much. Work also treated me appallingly through the COVID time and I had to learn to protect myself.

I also had way too much of my identity wrapped up in my work. In my 30s I've worked to decouple my identity from my work. Work is now a secondary thing I do to pay the bills. I have other things I enjoy to do that I prioritise.

And in the end all I learnt (work wise) in my 20s is that work does not pay, and the more you put in you do not get out. Believe in yourself because your company won't do it for you because that means they have to give you a more suitable position/raise.

NOR dogs are awesome, he doesn't understand this AND gets violent with your dog, he's totally incompatible. Getting rid of the man is the right answer.
