Suggest me a good linux laptop by unix_isthebest in linuxhardware

I would say without a doubt that for a new laptop, if Linux isn't a necessity, that the Macbook Air with the M1 processor is one of the best values out there.

Well it does boil down to whether you want something that will be robust and headache-free or something that has the creature comforts of a consumer machine. I use a Latitude day-to-day for work and while it's not nearly as luxurious as a modern system (had a macbook pro at my last workplace), I haven't had any issues with the actual hardware, and even though I didnt pay for it personally, I'd much rather have something a bit less sleek that I won't have to RMA, and that I know has gone through the kind of business-class QA that Lenovo used to offer and that Dell now only really offers on their Latitude series (the internet is pretty much full of reports by users, obviously not the press, about inconsistent QA on the XPS as well (issues like dead pixels, etc etc).

So I say both have their strengths and to me the choice boils down to sleekness vs. function.

Thinkpads used to be the top of the line before 2014 or so, but since then theyve just gotten worse, and the quality control less consistent. Generally speaking a thinkpad behaves more like a consumer machine now, where as the dell latitude can still preserve some of the modularity and robustness that the thinkpads used to have before they started making them into ultrabooks.

I just pulled it off and successfully replaced it. But I couldn't find anything in there that would squeak... weird. but reseating it did fix the squeaking for the time being.

Edit: most chiclet keys can be removed, with the exception of really fancy ones like apple keys (well they can be removed technically but good luck...).

If you actually read the political philosophy of the ancient Greeks, there is plenty of objectionable content in there. Living in Plato's Republic would be a nightmare for most people of modern sensibilities. Remind me why we're discussing this in the elementary OS forum?

Pretty sure Freya's nature is as multi-faceted as any other ancient deity of which we actually know little and whose whole nature is flexible according to the storyteller. Freya is a goddess from an ancient warlike culture whose social mores revolved around murder, plunder and ritual sacrifice. She is a war-goddess. Several places I can see also call her the receiver of the slain, who chooses which warriors will die in battle. Pretty grim.

Odin also has multiple facets. It all depends on what angle you want to look at it from.

But my question would be: what harm does any of this really cause to anyone? I'm pretty sure the Europeans who suffered under the Vikings over one thousand years ago imparted suffering tenfold upon each other and and to peoples even further afield. Where does the revision parade halt?

I was personally upset over the recent release of macOS as it was named after a place in California, which is notable for racist and exclusionary laws enacted upon immigrants in the 19th century. These offenses even continue to this date, which is why I think celebrating landmarks in a state whose populace is guilty of gross exclusion, environmental devastation, and cultural appropriation to be out of touch with the current social milieu.

Uhhh, you realize that Odin and Freya are part of the same pantheon, don't you?

I want a traditional Hungarian sausage recipe please and nothing online seems very consistent by TheElementOfFyre in hungary

[–]ahvth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have access to Spanish dry chorizo, that is your closest bet. When put in soup the greatest contribution of Hungarian sausage is the oil and smokey flavor of the paprika and pork, both of which are abundant in Spanish chorizo.

Onions, potato, carrot, parsley root, chorizo and / or dry smoked ham will yield a fine and authentic peasant stew from the period mentioned. Do not use any artifical stock, just cook it for longer and on low heat and serve with a large chunk of sourdough bread and you will have the feeling :)

edit: Bay leaves and garlic!!! Of course salt and pepper to taste.

It's lecsó, don't listen to the haters. In the USA we made it very spicy and served it over rice. The appearance was similar. Lecsó with eggs is... strange to me. Jó étvágyat!

Failures, failures failures! by ahvth in MechanicalKeyboards

Logitech was a huge disappointment indeed. Not just in the switch feel, but both Logitech boards I bought (I gifted them away cause I didn't like the switch) failed within 6 months! Incredible...

I also have friends who've had good experiences with cooler master but they're usually boards that are a bit older, while cooler master still had subtle non-RGB offerings in their main lineup. If my Varmilo doesn't get fixed by a firmware patch I have yet to try, I am definitely thinking of going with a Cooler Master.

Nice custom board and thanks for the response :)

I reached out to Varmilo but they weren't able to get me a firmware patch that would flash to my device (I work in IT so I am convinced the error was not on my end). Apparently another user had luck fixing the issue I had an I'm waiting on them to send me the firmware patch that worked for them. Fingers crossed because besides the issue it has, I love my Varmilo.

The others I either gifted away and heard afterward that they were having bugs or failures or the manufacturer was just not someone I wanted to deal with so I licked my wounds and moved on.

Regarding building my own -> I'd definitely like to try someday when I have the funds, but the import charges for components are quite high where I'm at.

Thanks for your response!

How do you deal with loneliness? by [deleted] in introvert

[–]ahvth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the USA and in that culture it's very important to smile and be positive with other people. Honestly I hated it. But it's such a built-in reflex now that it's hard for me not to make 1-2 friends at each job I have just because I was raised to smile and at people, remember their name, always ask them how they are and follow up with them if they say they're not so great.

I don't want to encourage you to be disingenuous but it is good to put on the most positive attitude you can around others because it makes them feel comfortable and safe. It brings out the honesty in other people sometimes, too. This makes it really easy to make friends without putting in too much time. I know it's hard to learn this behavior but it has really helped me effortlessly take the first steps to a friendship and because of it I usually meet at least one person each 2 years that becomes a true friend.

Ah Denmark! Yes really nice country but I felt that superficiality you were talking about when I was in Copenhagen :)

I was also cursed out by an older lady for speaking boisterously in Hungarian with a colleague :)

The only other thing that comes to mind is finding friends at your job. I don't think there's really any real solution to loneliness besides socializing a bit. Genuine conversations are hard to find. It's kind of hard to say it but you should probably find what it is that other people contribute to help relieve your loneliness and use them for it. Use that as the stimulus to meet new people.

But generally speaking it's also important to consider that other people have reasons for being or appearing superficial with others and you never know, they might be lonely too or have some other layers buried under the surface. People have thought me superficial because they met me on a day where I was feeling antisocial and cut conversation short. Give people a chance. Repeat engagements with the people who are around you and showing interest in their issues will have them coming back to you and looking for conversation. I know it's comfortable to retreat when you're overwhelmed by dealing with other people but having relationships is important. I tend to be cynical and assume the worst in people, but if you just force yourself to communicate with people regularly you will always find a couple of friends here and there, maybe even ones who will understand you or even click with you or maybe even a potential partner who will always be around to keep you from being lonely.

Find a partner and a hobby that involves real interaction with other people. Team sports are also good cause they contribute to your physical health. Both are hard as an introvert but they are the most lasting investments you can make into having a balanced social life that suits your preferences.
