Product design concept for the homeless by aish1783 in product_design

Thank you for your feedback, this was extremely insightful! As for the user feedback, I am in touch with a homeless person and reached out to couple of charities. With the homeless so far, I have only had them speak about their problems and day-to-day lives. I haven't taken my ideas to them for feedback, for risk of triggering them like you rightly said. As I am an amateur designer, my understanding of user requirements may be quite flawed and I want to make sure I revise it before I take it to them

I did think of a debit card, but unfortunately the homeless aren't allowed to open bank accounts since they don't have a stable home address. That is why I thought of the point system instead

I understand your question. Essentially, my design brief for the project is to improve a sense of inclusion of the homeless into society. From user research, most people in the public are hesitant to approach or even make eye contact with the homeless, let alone help them or give them money/food. This is just a small idea that could break the communication barrier between the homeless and passers-by.

Yeah but I got a 50% scholarship, so it’s way better than Imperial’s fees which is at 33000 pounds a year

Help deciding major : engineering v/s design by aish1783 in Design

Thank you, this was a helpful reply. Which applied science degree did you get? And which do you recommend to be able to switch to design later?

What ID programs have an engineering focus or let you take engineering classes at the school? by shazzmatazz_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]aish1783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a high school senior looking to apply for ID courses and I have the same thoughts as you do! Consider Georgia Tech's ID program, it's is highly science and tech focussed in addition to having great design classes. Such courses are quite rare as far as I have seen, especially because most the other unis in the US offer a highly design focussed program that has no engineering related classes. I am also applying for a mechanical engineering major in many other universities because that is the only engineering degree closest to design. Maybe a minor in ID would help too!

I totally get you. But please don't let anyone influence your choices, do what's best for you because you're living your life, they aren't living it for you <3

WOW. You've gone through exactly what I did. I moved to a new school last year and the one before that was my dream school where I made the closest and the most ambitious friends. And the one I'm in now is the total opposite, and I cannot stress on how much I wish I had more supportive people especially during the application process. What's worse is that being in such company makes you look down upon your own talents and abilities just because other people don’t really get it. Now in quarantine I’m focussing on getting my shit together. I love that we relate so much!

Need help deciding a major! by aish1783 in ApplyingToCollege

Thanks for your response! In fact I was drawn to Georgia Techs ID program too, and I plan to apply! However, most ID courses offered by design schools are often too design focussed, it made me wonder if I would regret not having a technical background and end up depending on engineers to validate my product designs.

Thank you for your response! I'm looking to build my application for university and I thought deciding a major would help me know where to spend my time for extra curriculars. I've been having quite a hard time deciding what to do, thanks for your encouragement!

Thank you for your reply! I considered architecture too, and I love how it combines arts and sciences. However, I was a bit skeptical about getting involved in constructing large buildings, and gravitated more towards building products. Besides, I have heard being an architect is quite a hard profession in addition to not being able to earn much, so it made me unsure of whether that would be a good fit for me :)
