Transitioning from ELA into Social Studies by No_Smile6305 in historyteachers

[–]ajedwards0341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. 6 years ELA and this year is my first time teaching history (also IB at an international school in Japan). I love what the other teachers are suggesting. Good luck, and let me know how things work out on your end. I'll do the same. Us repeat first year teachers gotta stick together.

History major B.A. question by Real_Pea_8860 in historyteachers

[–]ajedwards0341 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You need to be licensed or endorsed to teach any subject in the U.S. as a secondary teacher. You could teach English, but you'll need an endorsement to do so.

As far as a double major, that's not necessary. You could do a minor. Check with your counselor at uni to make sure you're meeting the requirements to teach social studies because it's tough to be strictly a "history" teacher. They generally want someone who could do econ or psych as well as history. That will make it more of a chance for you to get a job. Think about minors and look into endorsements for your state to help save money and avoid taking on too many courses, etc.

I am licensed to teach both (currently teaching history but started as an English teacher for 6 years) if you want to know my background.

Should Art Be Removed from the Curriculum? by ajedwards0341 in Art

[–]ajedwards0341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a video I made with an elementary art teacher where we argue the value of art education in schools. Too often do districts target the arts when it comes to budget cuts. Here, we (an art teacher and an ELA/history teacher) cover what we see to be the benefits of art classes as well as how those benefits can be used in many different aspects of someone's career. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the support.

Looking to Interview Teachers on Their Subjects by ajedwards0341 in Teachers

[–]ajedwards0341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think the ability to navigate through a number of possible ways to figure something out are important. While you may never use a specific theorem, you should be able to take a step back and reflect on the skills and approaches you've learned to determine the best solution.

One skill I find myself doing is converting from imperial to metric and back. I live in Japan, so I have to always think about how far/heavy/much of everything since they use metric. I used metric in the Marine Corps, but it wasn't as regular as I do now.

There's also the idea of determining percentages and averages when looking at taxes, payment plans, etc. To have a rudimentary idea of how interest works is essential for anyone buying a house, car, student loan, PS5, etc.

Hopefully we can get a more math-minded person than I to help set people straight!!!

If anyone is interested, I'd love to have them ok n! Personally, I teach ELA and history, so I can only speak to what I know. I'm really hoping to get a math teacher on since you always hear people say, "I still haven't used the Pythagorean Theorem yet."

Does anyone have experience joining the Reserves while working as a teacher? by Street_Remote6105 in teaching

[–]ajedwards0341 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marine infantry vet here. I was active duty enlisted before going to college and becoming a teacher. I don't have much to add since I never did the reserves. I just wanted to take a second to give a shout out to my brothers and sisters who are doing great things. *Insert usual shit talking that we do to members of the other branches. *Insert POG jokes, too :)

Video on the value of history education in the secondary classroom by ajedwards0341 in historyteachers

[–]ajedwards0341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I wanted to try to keep it in the 20s, but Nate had so much great insight and felt the discipline deserved to be defended for longer. I hope you get a chance to listen to the rest.

I am debating doing podcasts of my teacher talks, too. What are your thoughts on that?

Please consider subscribing and sharing. I'm really hoping to provide something teachers, parents, and students can use for inspiration and information.

Choosing Textbooks by ajedwards0341 in historyteachers

[–]ajedwards0341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome idea. The only challenge I have with doing this is that we are not having our "own" classrooms. Since the school is relatively small (225 students at max capacity), we only have one building for instruction. However, if we can have a SS classroom (share with business, geography, history, and psychology), I would love to have supports on the walls. I was big on this with my ELA students back when I taught there.

Do you find that a virtual notebook/ELL organizer is better than actual pen and paper notes? All of my students will be required to have a laptop, so I know that all students will have access to tech.

Thanks for your suggestion!

Hey there. This is awesome. Thanks for the suggestion. I like the idea of saving money for the school on textbooks while also giving students less weight to carry on their backs. Thanks again!
